LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim April 26-30, 2015, as Karaoke Week in the State of New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality of
life of the citizens of the State of New York is greatly enriched by the
availability of exceptional recreational activities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to memorial-
ize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 26-30, 2015, as Karaoke
Week in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Karaoke is a popular activity enjoyed by New York State citi-
zens from all walks of life; and
WHEREAS, A combination of the Japanese words "Kara," meaning empty,
and "Okesurota," meaning orchestra, karaoke has been gaining in popular-
ity for decades and is now a staple of the American entertainment scene;
and
WHEREAS, This versatile social activity can be performed in the priva-
cy of one's own home, at public gatherings, or on the go with the advent
of mobile karaoke apps; and
WHEREAS, Karaoke is often enjoyed at many of life's most momentous
occasions including weddings, birthdays, graduations, and job
promotions; furthermore, it can also be an effective form of stress
relief; and
WHEREAS, The inspiration for many impressive acts, the largest karaoke
event took place at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee, on
August 22, 2009, when 160,000 people sang "Friends in Low Places" by
Garth Brooks before the beginning of a NASCAR race; and
WHEREAS, Leonardo Polverelli performed the longest karaoke marathon by
an individual, lasting 101 hours, 59 minutes, and 15 seconds, and sing-
ing 1,295 songs at a fundraising event in Pesaro, Italy; and
WHEREAS, The longest karaoke marathon by multiple participants lasted
for 792 hours and 2 minutes at an event organized by Guangqi Honda Auto-
mobile Company in Changchun, Jilin, China, May 22-June 24, 2014; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the art of karaoke has provided a safe
and enjoyable form of recreation much appreciated by the residents of
the great State of New York, and karaoke enthusiasts across the world;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim April 26-30, 2015, as
Karaoke Week in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
