LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Dr. W. Ruth Whitney upon the occasion
of her designation for special recognition after 30 years of dedicated
service to the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York, on June 7,
2015
WHEREAS, The character and richness of religious and community life in
this noble Empire State is nourished and fulfilled through the faithful
concern and selfless devotion of those who would commit their energies
and purpose to the ministry of others; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to bring full
recognition and just tribute to those individuals who distinguish them-
selves and the ministry through their unremitting commitment and preemi-
nence of service; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Dr. W. Ruth
Whitney upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition
after 30 years of dedicated service to the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church,
Brooklyn, New York, celebrated on June 7, 2015; and
WHEREAS, Dr. W. Ruth Whitney has brought to her ministry an overwhelm-
ing spirit of charity and compassion, acting from vision and enlight-
enment in conducting her administrative and spiritual duties, while
always displaying the highest standards of personal and professional
integrity and dedication; and
WHEREAS, One of the most distinguished women in the New York Metropol-
itan area as well as in the United States, Dr. W. Ruth Whitney is the
wife and Leading Lady of the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New
York, led by the Reverend Dr. Curtis L. Whitney; and
WHEREAS, Dr. W. Ruth Whitney earned her bachelor's degree from the
State University of New York at Old Westbury and received her Master's
degree in Social Work from Adelphi University, Garden City, New York;
and
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman has often been called upon to establish
programs of Christian Education and Christian Leadership throughout the
Nation, and has used her broad knowledge and understanding to cultivate
and nurture Ministers' Wives groups and the local churches into notable
examples of service; and
WHEREAS, Dr. W. Ruth Whitney is a co-Instructor for Marriage and Fami-
ly for Couples, a class at the National Baptist Congress of Christian
Education; and
WHEREAS, An advocate for positive change and development throughout
the city of New York, Dr. W. Ruth Whitney has held numerous leadership
positions within the church community, including Dean, Empire Baptist
State Convention Ministers' Wives and Ministers' Widows; President,
Eastern Baptist Association of Ministers' Wives and Widows, Fellowship
of New York; President, Baptist Ministers' Wives and Ministers' Widows
of Greater New York and Vicinity; Assistant Secretary, Empire State
Convention Ministers' Wives Ministers' Widows; and Founder, New Members
Ministry, Mt. Sinai Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, Today, Dr. W. Ruth Whitney holds the titles of Assistant
Dean, International Ministers' Wives and Ministers' Widows; and First-
Vice President, New York State Interdenominational Ministers' Wives and
Ministers' Widows; as well as Vice President, Empire State Convention
Ministers' Wives and Ministers' Widows; and
WHEREAS, Devoted to the well-being of her community, Dr. W. Ruth Whit-
ney has participated as a member of the Advisory Council of the New York
Organ Donor Network; currently, she is a member of Lefferts Gardens
Civic Association, Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Dr. W. Ruth Whitney has been the recipient of numerous awards
and accolades for her tremendous civic endeavors and for her faithful
work in her church, including Outstanding Personality of the Week, Woman
of Distinction Award, History-Maker Award, and Woman of the Year Award;
in addition, she is a member of the Board of Directors of the American
Baptist Churches USA, chairing the International Ministries Working
Group on African Affairs; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman of God has always given enlight-
enment, guidance and wisdom to the many entrusted to her care and has
administered abundantly and unstintingly to the spiritual and corporal
needs of all; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when a person
of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our attention it is
appropriate to publicly and jubilantly proclaim and commend that indi-
vidual for the edification of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Dr. W. Ruth Whitney upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition after 30 years of dedicated service to the Mt. Sinai
Baptist Church, Brooklyn, New York, noting her unremitting and compas-
sionate faith and her exemplary service to God, man, and her community;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. W. Ruth Whitney.
