LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Sister Mary Anne Brawley,
D.C., compassionate spiritual leader, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of her community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Sister Mary Anne Brawley of Binghamton, New York, died on
Saturday, June 6, 2015, at home with her Sisters in the Community of the
Daughters of Charity, at the age of 81; and
WHEREAS, Born May 19, 1934, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Mary Anne Braw-
ley was one of three children born to Henry and Beatrice Brawley; and
WHEREAS, Mary Anne Brawley attended Daughters of Charity School,
Emmitsburg, Maryland; in 1957, she graduated from St. Joseph's College
in Emmitsburg, with a Bachelor's degree in English, a knowledge she
utilized throughout her life as a prolific writer; and
WHEREAS, Sister Mary Anne furthered her education through the years,
achieving a Master's degree in Library Science at St. John's University,
Jamaica, New York, in 1966, as well as an additional Master's degree in
Education Administration at Canisius College, Buffalo, New York, in
1979; and
WHEREAS, Sister Mary Anne Brawley's commitment to excellence, and her
spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, includ-
ing charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Throughout six decades of service as a Daughter of Charity,
Sister Mary Anne Brawley used her education, gifts and talents to serve
those in need; her first assignment was at Our Lady Queen of Peace,
Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, Sister Mary Anne Brawley distinguished herself in her profes-
sion and by her sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of her community; and
WHEREAS, During her 22 year career as a formal educator, Sister Mary
Anne Brawley served in the following schools: Elizabeth Seton High
School, Bladensburg, Maryland; Seton Catholic High School, Endicott, New
York; and Cardinal McCloskey High School, Albany; and
WHEREAS, In 1998, Sister Mary Anne Brawley was assigned to Lourdes
Hospital, Binghamton, New York, serving as Chair of the Board of Direc-
tors for 14 years; in this capacity, she quickly learned the unique
language of the healthcare industry, and endeared herself to physicians,
associates and numerous individuals and families she had come to know
and love in the Triple Cities; and
WHEREAS, Sister Mary Anne Brawley will be remembered for her marvelous
sense of humor, and her ability to never forget a name of her students,
their parents and perhaps their grandparents; she was also a committed
Daughter of Charity, rich in compassion and caring, with a unique abili-
ty to listen and respond in prayer and action; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by her brother, Henry "Duke" Brawley, Sister Mary
Anne Brawley is survived by her sister, Noreen (Jack) Bamford; three
nieces, Colleen (Mark) Wamback, Patricia (Alin) Bamford, and Elizabeth
(Jeff) Elliott, as well as many Sisters in the Community of the Daugh-
ters of Charity; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Sister Mary Anne Brawley leaves behind a legacy which will
long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory
to all she served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Sister Mary Anne Brawley, D.C., devoted spiritual
leader, distinguished citizen and dynamic member of her community; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Sister Mary Anne Brawley.
