LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Katherine Saunders,
renowned public servant, distinguished citizen, and devoted member of
her community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to mourn publicly the
death of certain prominent individuals whose valued contributions to
their community, their profession, and their heritage served to enhance
the quality of life in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Katherine Saunders of Glens Falls, New York, died on Wednes-
day, June 3, 2015 at the age of 80; and
WHEREAS, Born September 10, 1934 in Denver, Colorado, Katherine Saun-
ders, affectionately known as Kay, attended public school as well as
Gerry and Margy O'Niels Personality School, a school for theater; she
was a Girl Scout in Troop 55 in Sodus, New York, and graduated from
Sodus High School in 1952; and
WHEREAS, Kay Saunders moved to Glens Falls, New York with her husband
in 1958; she began her illustrious political career in the late 1970s,
during which time she managed the district office of a state assembly-
woman; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, this esteemed woman was a talk show host on
WBZA-AM radio in Glens Falls for several years in the early 1980s; and
WHEREAS, Dubbed as Glens Falls' Chief Ambassador, Kay Saunders served
on the city Common Council for 16 years, eight years as 3rd Ward Coun-
cilwoman and eight years as Councilwoman-At-Large; during her tenure she
was instrumental in keeping local government from becoming divisive; and
WHEREAS, Active in the community she so ably served, Kay Saunders was
past treasurer of Warren County Children's Committee, devoted member of
Glens Falls Kiwanis Club and chair of the Interclub Committee; she was
also a member of all local museums, Feeder Canal Alliance, Mystic
Seaport, South Street Seaport, Fort Edward Historical Society and the
Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council; and
WHEREAS, Proud of her ancestry, Kay Saunders was a member of the Alba-
ny Colony Society of Mayflower Descendants, Jane McCrea Chapter,
National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, and an
At-Large member of Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War; and
WHEREAS, An avid sports fan, Kay Saunders served on the Sports
Promotion Committee of the Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce and
the Glens Falls Civic Center Foundation Board; and
WHEREAS, In addition, she was a charter member and past board member
of the Adirondack Red Wings Booster Club, past president of the White
Sox Booster Club and Glens Falls Tigers Booster Club; she was also a
season ticket holder for numerous local sports; and
WHEREAS, Kay Saunders lived her life by the belief that one must be
knowledgeable about their past, active in their present and concerned
and willing to work for their future; her wit and her passion for the
community will truly be missed by all those who were lucky enough to
know her; and
WHEREAS, Kay Saunders was sincerely loved and greatly respected by all
those with whom she worked; committed to her community, the people she
represented, her State, and her Nation, she served her public with
dignity, dedication and incisive wisdom; and
WHEREAS, Over a long and meritorious life of service on behalf of
others, Kay Saunders was a woman of action, of integrity, and of commit-
ment, whose true compassion was generously given to all who knew her;
and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by her parents, Carroll Walker Kelley, Martha
Pauline Kelley (Burden), and her stepfather, James D. Burden, Kay Saun-

ders is survived by her loving husband of nearly 62 years, Richard; her
three beautiful children, Richard (Lynn), Craig (Marguerite) and Eliza-
beth (Scott); beloved grandchildren, Richard (Caroline), Ian and Jacob
(Morgan); as well as her step-grandchildren, Lauren (John) and Eric; her
brother, Carroll (Georgia); and several nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Kay Saunders leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all she
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Katherine Saunders, renowned public servant, distin-
guished citizen, and devoted member of her community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Katherine Saunders.
