LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Julie Kapuvari upon the occasion of
her designation by Girl Scouts of the United States of America as a 2015
National Young Woman of Distinction

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of individuals who
devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Julie Kapuvari upon the occasion of her designation by Girl Scouts of
the United States of America as a 2015 National Young Woman of
Distinction; and
WHEREAS, Julie Kapuvari was honored with a 2015 National Young Woman
of Distinction Award at a Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) luncheon,
held at Edith Macy Conference Center in Briarcliff Manor, New York on
Wednesday, October 7, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The celebration included a special candlelight ceremony by a
blazing fire, a pinning ceremony and presentations from each of the
recipients; and
WHEREAS, Each year, Girl Scouts of the United States of America
(GSUSA) names 20 Girl Scout Gold Awardees National Young Women of
Distinction (NYWOD), a prestigious honor; this highly competitive award
is given to Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors whose Gold Award projects
demonstrated extraordinary leadership, had a measurable and sustainable
impact, and addressed a local challenge related to a national and/or
global issue; and
WHEREAS, Julie Kapuvari, currently a freshman at Cornell University,
was a 2015 graduate from Massapequa High School where she was a member
of the National Honor Society; she was the captain of the Varsity Rifle
Team, a participant in the Rifle Team All County, an All State Champion
in her sophomore, junior and senior years of high school and a compet-
itor in the Junior Olympic Regional Qualifiers; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Julie Kapuvari was the Drum Captain of the
marching band, member of the Art Club, Surfriders Club, French Club,
Code Green Environmental Group and founder and president of the Long
Island Environmental Science Competition; and
WHEREAS, As a Girl Scout of Nassau County, Julie Kapuvari's Gold Award
project channeled her passion for environmental science and her concern
over the worldwide decline of honeybee populations, collaborating with
the Homecoming Farm, an organic community-supported farm on the property
of the Sisters of St. Dominic convent and the Cornell Cooperative Exten-
sion of Suffolk County; and
WHEREAS, Julie Kapuvari enrolled in the Long Island Beekeeping Associ-
ation apiculture class to become more fluent in the nature of honeybees,
dispel common behavioral misconceptions and highlight the benefits of a
beekeeping program; she received a grant from the Long Island Beekeepers
Club (LIBC) for a nucleus of one queen and 5,000 honeybees; and
WHEREAS, As a novice beekeeper and member of the LIBC, Julie
Kapuvari's "Pollination Project: Don't Bee Afraid, Bee-lieve" helped
address the problem of bee colony losses attributed to Colony Collapse
Disorder by conducting presentations for a variety of groups and educat-
ing them about the need for bee colonies and pesticide free environ-
ments; and
WHEREAS, Julie Kapuvari continues to give presentations to members of
her community on the impact of her project and how it has resulted in a
local, sustained pollination source that will help with food production

on the farm for years to come; the bee colony is on an organic farm and
will contribute to its sustainability and productivity, while the organ-
ic farm creates a safe haven for the endangered species; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention
it is appropriate to publicly proclaim and commend them for the edifica-
tion and emulation of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Julie Kapuvari upon the occasion of her designation by Girl
Scouts of the United States of America as a 2015 National Young Woman of
Distinction; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Julie Kapuvari.
