LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Building
Material Teamsters Local 282 in Lake Success, New York, on January 16,
2016

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to publicly acknowl-
edge those organizations whose endeavors serve the best interests of the
workforce in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Labor unions, through the integrity and dedication of their
leadership, have assumed an essential and integral role in ensuring the
welfare, safety and economic stability of the workers of this State and
Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of Building Material Teamsters Local 282 in
Lake Success, New York, to be celebrated at its Annual Gala & Scholar-
ship Fund Dinner, on Saturday, January 16, 2016, at Russo's on the Bay,
Howard Beach, New York; and
WHEREAS, For the past 100 years, Building Material Teamsters Local
282, based in New York City and Long Island, has provided both union
representation and fund benefits to a wide range of industry workers
since its Charter was signed on November 22, 1915; and
WHEREAS, Building Material Teamsters Local 282 represents a wide-range
of proficient and skillful workers including flatbed trailer drivers,
dump trailer drivers, 10 wheeler dump truck drivers, forklift operators,
dock men, and concrete inspectors, as well as concrete truck drivers who
haul such materials as dirt, gravel, cement, plumbing supplies and
lumber; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous leadership of President Thomas Gesualdi,
the hardworking men and women of Building Material Teamsters Local 282
have worked on various projects from the Empire State Building to the
World Trade Center and the new Freedom Tower; this powerful organization
was a major presence at Ground Zero and helped repair the neighborhoods
and beaches of New York City and Long Island after Hurricane Sandy; and
WHEREAS, Members of Building Material Teamsters Local 282 have helped
build New York City and its presence can be seen every day throughout
the five boroughs of New York and Long Island; and
WHEREAS, History teaches us that in many parts of the world, including
our beloved Nation, craftsmen and journeymen in various trades and
disciplines united and joined voluntary associations to represent their
numbers; and
WHEREAS, Unions have contributed to democracy, the economic vitality
of our communities, and the well-being of New York's working families by
providing employees with a voice on the job; and
WHEREAS, For the past 100 years, Building Material Teamsters Local 282
has contributed to the building of our communities and has fought dili-
gently to better the working and living conditions for those who labor
in the proud tradition of their crafts; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Building Material Teamsters Local
282 in Lake Success, New York, fully confident that it will continue to
enjoy the sparkling success which has so characterized its past; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Thomas Gesualdi, President, Building Material Teamsters Local
282.
