LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 210th Anniversary of the Town
of Wawarsing, New York
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the proud and distinguished histories of the people and communi-
ties which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concerns, and in full accord with its long-
standing tradition, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate
the 210th Anniversary of the Town of Wawarsing, New York; and
WHEREAS, Located in the western part of Ulster County, the Town of
Wawarsing's name means "a place where the stream bends" in the Warwar-
sink language and refers particularly to the joining of the Ver Nooy
Kill and the Rondout Creek; and
WHEREAS, Originally a settlement of the Lenape tribe of Native Ameri-
cans, the Town of Wawarsing's first European pioneer was Waarner Hoorn-
beek, who leased land there in 1685; and
WHEREAS, In 1703, the areas of Mombaccus and Wawarasink, Ulster Coun-
ty, were combined to form the Town of Rochester; this area took part in
the struggle against the British during the Revolutionary War, and expe-
rienced great hardships helping to secure our country's freedom; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Wawarsing was officially established in 1806,
when the settlements of Wawarsing, Napanoch, Laurenkill, Lackawack, and
Greenfield joined together to form one municipality out of Southern
Rochester and parts of un-incorporated Ulster County; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, the Town of Wawarsing continues its commitment to enhancing
the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business,
institutional and educational climate, and providing all essential
services; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize and commemorate milestones in the history of communities, both
large and small, in this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate 210th Anniversary of the Town of Wawarsing, New York; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Town of Wawarsing, New York.
