LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Rosalia Gioia upon the occasion of
her induction into the 2015 Nassau County High School Athletic Hall of
Fame
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor those indi-
viduals whose exceptional athletic prowess leaves an enduring legacy in
their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Rosalia Gioia upon the occasion of her induction into the 2015
Nassau County High School Athletic Hall of Fame, which was celebrated at
its Induction Ceremony on September 30, 2015; and
WHEREAS, One of over 1,000 officials on Long Island, Rosalia Gioia was
recognized for her outstanding service and leadership to the high school
interscholastic programs for boys and girls in Nassau County; and
WHEREAS, Well liked and respected by her peers, Rosalia Gioia was also
inducted into the United States National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the Long
Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame, the Nassau County
Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Hunter College
Distinguished Alumnae Hall of Fame, and the Hunter College Athletic Hall
of Fame, as well as the New Hyde Park Memorial High School Hall of Fame;
and
WHEREAS, Born in Brooklyn, New York, Rosalia Gioia majored in physical
education at Hunter College; during her time there, she realized she had
a passion for officiating; and
WHEREAS, Rosalia Gioia began her illustrious career officiating in
local Catholic Youth Organization games; those games evolved into
Catholic high school sports for girls; and
WHEREAS, Rosalia Gioia was one of the original staff members of New
Hyde Park Memorial High School when it opened in 1956; during her 37
year tenure, she coached girl's field hockey, lacrosse, basketball,
tennis and volleyball; and
WHEREAS, In addition, she served as a teacher, an Administrator, the
girl's Athletic Director, and the Chairman of the Physical Education
Department; and
WHEREAS, For more than 60 years, Rosalia Gioia has been coaching and
officiating various sports games including girls' basketball, volley-
ball, field hockey, lacrosse and softball at various levels of play; and
WHEREAS, Today, at the age of 84, Rosalia Gioia still remains active;
she runs track and plays softball in senior competition, and continues
to officiate hockey and lacrosse; and
WHEREAS, Athletes such as Rosalia Gioia provide a tremendous service
to the future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of
student-athletes in their athletic journeys and ensuring their success
in their future years; and
WHEREAS, Rosalia Gioia has clearly been an inspiration to the youth of
Nassau County, as well as to the community-at-large, and accordingly
merits recognition and applause for her impressive dedication to others;
and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
public education by providing their skills and talents to our students
and our schools; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Rosalia Gioia upon the occasion of her induction into the
2015 Nassau County High School Athletic Hall of Fame on September 30,
2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Rosalia Gioia.
