LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 110th Anniversary of the
Warwick Historical Society
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the efforts
of those organizations that seek to bring recognition to historical
places within the State of New York, and in doing so, help to ensure
that the complete history of our State and Nation is preserved and
shared with generations of citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 110th Anniversary of the Warwick Historical Society; and
WHEREAS, First inaugurated in 1906, the Warwick Historical Society was
founded by a small group of community members who gathered in the 1810
House with a shared mission: to protect, preserve and promote the rich
heritage of the Town of Warwick and its villages; and
WHEREAS, In less than ten years, the Warwick Historical Society's
membership quickly grew to over 100 area residents and the organization
published its first work, WARWICK HISTORICAL PAPERS; and
WHEREAS, In 1915, the Warwick Historical Society discussed the
purchase of its first property, the Shingle House, built by Daniel Burt
for his son, Daniel Jr., in 1764; with the tremendous support of its
members, the Board President signed a contract for the building and
moved to incorporate the Historical Society; and
WHEREAS, During the 1950s and 1960s, this esteemed preservation group
took possession of a number of historically vital properties including
the Old School Baptist Meeting House built in 1810 which came to be
known as Lewis Park, the Sly Barn constructed in 1825, and the 1810
House; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the past two decades, the Warwick Historical Soci-
ety has continued to grow and expand with the addition of the Azariah
Ketchum House built in 1810, the Hasbrouck Carriage House erected in the
1840s, the United African Methodist Episcopal Church constructed in
1906, and the Francis Baird Tavern which dates back to 1766; and
WHEREAS, In January 2011, the former Albert Wisner Public Library was
generously donated to the Historical Society and re-named the A.W.
Buckbee Center; today, the building acts as the Society's headquarters,
and is home to a historic textile and clothing collection and extensive
archives, as well as static exhibitions; and
WHEREAS, The Warwick Historical Society's former headquarters, The
Shingle House, is currently being restored with help, in part, through a
grant from the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Warwick Historical Society is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its volunteers and staff, whose involve-
ment is, and always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment,
an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in
all endeavors on behalf of this institution and the community it serves;
and
WHEREAS, Under the illustrious guidance of Executive Director Lisa-Ann
Weisbrod, the Warwick Historical Society will continue to preserve
important landmarks and educate future generations for many years to
come; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is pleased to have this opportunity to
express its highest admiration for the Warwick Historical Society, and
for all of the individuals who have worked to bring proper attention to
a place and time which merits recognition in the grand panorama of the
history of our State and Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 110th Anniversary of the Warwick Historical Society; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Lisa-Ann Weisbrod, Executive Director, Warwick Historical
Society.
