LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Coalition of Labor Union Women
(CLUW) upon the occasion of its designation as recipient of the Kate
Mullany Medal by the American Labor Studies Center on December 8, 2015

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to publicly acknowl-
edge those organizations whose endeavors serve the best interests of the
workforce in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, History teaches us that in many parts of the world, including
our beloved Nation, craftsmen and journeymen in various trades and
disciplines united and joined voluntary associations to represent their
numbers; and
WHEREAS, Unions have contributed to democracy, the economic vitality
of our communities, and the well-being of New York's working families by
providing employees with a voice on the job; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) upon the occasion of its desig-
nation as recipient of the Kate Mullany Medal by the American Labor
Studies, celebrated at its Annual Recognition Reception on Tuesday,
December 8, 2015, at NYSUT Headquarters, Latham, New York; and
WHEREAS, Owners of the Kate Mullany National Historic Site, the Ameri-
can Labor Studies is currently restoring this American treasure; a
National Landmark since 1998, the house is located at 350 Eighth Street,
Troy, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Kate Mullany Medal was established to honor the legacy of
Kate Mullany, a young Irish immigrant who formed and later led America's
first all-female union; this auspicious award was bestowed upon the CLUW
for their partnership with the Berger-Marks Foundation; and
WHEREAS, In 1974, the CLUW was established to unify all union women in
a viable organization to determine their common problems and concerns
and to develop action programs within the framework of their union to
deal effectively with their objectives; and
WHEREAS, The CLUW, which is endorsed by AFL-CIO, is a nonpartisan
organization comprised of members in 54 International and National
Unions across the United States and Canada; and
WHEREAS, The dedicated members of CLUW fight for equal pay, child care
and elder care benefits, job security, safe workplaces, affordable
health care, contraceptive equity and protection from sexual harassment
and violence at work; and
WHEREAS, The local chapters of CLUW educate members, keep them up-to-
date on important issues and provide a support network for women in
unions; and
WHEREAS, For over 40 years, CLUW has contributed to the building of
our communities and has fought diligently to better the working and
living conditions for those who labor in the proud tradition of their
crafts; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW) upon the occasion of its
designation as recipient of the Kate Mullany Medal by the American Labor
Studies Center on December 8, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW).
