LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Margarita Cortez upon the occasion of
her designation as recipient of the 2016 Scholarship Award by the Major
General Irene Trowell-Harris Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc.

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor the young
adults of today and leaders of tomorrow whose character and achievements
best exemplify the ideals and values cherished by this great State and
Nation; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Margarita Cortez upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the 2016 Scholarship Award by the Major General Irene Trowell-Harris
Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, This momentous occasion will be celebrated at the 18th Annual
Tuition Assistance Program on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Anthony's
Pier 9, New Windsor, New York; and
WHEREAS, A truly exceptional student, Margarita Cortez is a senior at
Newburgh Free Academy (NFA) where she is enrolled in all honors and
advanced placement courses; she also excels athletically as a member of
both the varsity volleyball and lacrosse teams; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Margarita Cortez' extracurricular activities are
varied and rigorous as well, ranging from extensive volunteerism for
Habitat for Humanity to participation in NFA's nationally known elec-
tric-car Concept Vehicle Racing Team; and
WHEREAS, Margarita Cortez plans to attend Northeastern University in
Boston as a pre-med biology major with the goal of becoming a pediatri-
cian; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her high school career, Margarita Cortez has
displayed exceptional academic achievement, a strong sense of community
responsibility, and a commitment to excellence which is unparalleled;
and
WHEREAS, Margarita Cortez, in achieving this academic honor, may take
just pride in the inspiration and contribution to the spirit of excel-
lence she brings to her family, friends, community and school; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Margarita Cortez upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the 2016 Scholarship Award by the Major General Irene Trowell-Harris
Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., and to extend to her best wishes for a
future of purposeful success and well-being; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Margarita Cortez.
