LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Jose-
phine-Louise Public Library
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across the great State
of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citi-
zenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the Josephine-Louise Public Library; and
WHEREAS, The Josephine-Louise Public Library of Walden, New York, was
founded as a circulating library club in 1896 by a group of local resi-
dents which included Walden's resident manufacturer and U.S. Congress-
man, Colonel Thomas W. Bradley; and
WHEREAS, Officially chartered in 1900 by the New York State Department
of Regents, and incorporated in 1910, the Josephine-Louise Public
Library was named after its benefactor, Colonel Bradley's wife, Jose-
phine, and daughter, Louise; and
WHEREAS, In 1916, the Josephine-Louise Public Library moved to its
permanent home at 5 Scofield Street; an expansion project added a second
floor and children's area to the library which was completed in 1998;
and
WHEREAS, Today, the Josephine-Louise Public Library continues to
provide valuable services to residents of the Village of Walden and the
surrounding areas; it proudly circulates more than 84,219 items per
year, and conducts more than 40,486 reference transactions; and
WHEREAS, The success enjoyed by the Josephine-Louise Public Library is
in direct correlation to the efforts of the many individuals who have
supported the development of the library over the years; and
WHEREAS, Equally commendable are the Josephine-Louise Public Library's
superbly skilled staff, whose involvement is and has always been charac-
terized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an
uncompromising standard of excellence in all of their efforts on behalf
of the library and the population it serves; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Josephine-
Louise Public Library may take just pride in its purposeful growth, as
it looks forward to continuing to serve the diverse educational,
cultural and intellectual needs of the community; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when public
institutions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Josephine-Louise Public
Library; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Josephine-Louise Public Library.
