LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring John Purcell Horton, Sr. posthumously
upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by Rensse-
laer County at its Honor-A-Veteran Ceremony on December 14, 2015
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend these
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor John
Purcell Horton, Sr. posthumously upon the occasion of his designation
for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor-A-Veteran
Ceremony which was celebrated on Monday, December 14, 2015; and
WHEREAS, John Purcell Horton was born on June 21, 1920, in Troy, New
York; and
WHEREAS, From June of 1942 to August of 1945, John Purcell Horton, Sr.
proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during
World War II; and
WHEREAS, John Purcell Horton, Sr. bravely fought as a combat infantry
soldier in the European Theater of the war, and spent time as a German
prisoner of war; and
WHEREAS, Upon separating from his distinguished military service with
the esteemed rank of Corporal, John Purcell Horton, Sr. worked for the
New York Telephone Company for 38 years until his retirement in 1982;
and
WHEREAS, An active member of his community, John Purcell Horton, Sr.
contributed his time as a member of the Holy Names Men Society, Spring
Little League, Telephone Pioneers of America, American Ex-Prisoners of
War, and the Emerald Athletic Club, as well as the Troy Lodge of the
Elks; and
WHEREAS, In his free time, John Purcell Horton, Sr. enjoyed bowling,
spending time with family and travel; and
WHEREAS, John Purcell Horton, Sr. was a loving husband to his wife
Rita, a caring father to his three sons, John Jr., Robert and Timothy,
and a doting grandfather to his grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited their patriotism both at home and abroad,
these men and women demonstrated their love for their country and merit
forevermore, the highest respect of their State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor John Purcell Horton, Sr. posthumously upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Rensselaer County at its Honor-A-
Veteran Ceremony on December 14, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of John Purcell Horton, Sr.
