LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Burn Center at Westchester Medical
Center, Valhalla, New York, upon the occasion of observing February 1-7,
2016, as National Burn Awareness Week

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize those
institutions within the State of New York which provide outstanding
medical care and vital services to meet the healthcare needs of their
patients; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Burn Center at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, New York, upon
the occasion of observing February 1-7, 2016, as National Burn Awareness
Week; and
WHEREAS, This year marks the 30th Anniversary of National Burn Aware-
ness Week, developed as a vehicle to promote burn awareness and
prevention among the general public, as well as high-risk groups, like
children and older adults; and
WHEREAS, With a mission to spread a common message of awareness and
prevention, the Burn Center at Westchester Medical Center's message for
2016 is Scald Prevention; the American Burn Association and National
Scald Prevention Campaign provide a wealth of information on this impor-
tant issue; and
WHEREAS, Burn Awareness Week, observed each year during the first full
week in the month of February, is designed to provide an opportunity for
burn, fire and life safety educators to unite in sharing a common burn
awareness and prevention message in our communities; and
WHEREAS, As the only Burn Center between New York City and the Canadi-
an border in Eastern New York, Westchester Medical Center offers hope
for survival and a productive life to hundreds of burn victims each
year; and
WHEREAS, The Burn Center maintains a team of highly trained and dedi-
cated burn specialists providing a full range of services from intensive
care through rehabilitation, with special attention to the individual's
physical, emotional and social needs; and
WHEREAS, The Burn Center is self-contained to minimize the risk of
infection to the most susceptible of patients: it has private rooms and
its own state-of-the art operating rooms and treatment areas; family
rooms, day rooms and a kitchen makes it more comfortable for both the
patients and their families; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the Burn Center is home to the regional Advanced
Wound Therapy and Hyperbaric Center, treating burn victims, as well as
people with a wide variety of injuries and wounds; and
WHEREAS, Coupled with its expert staff, the Burn Center at Westchester
Medical Center has had a long and sustained commitment to the health and
welfare of the citizens of Westchester, and therefore merits the highest
commendation of this Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Burn Center at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, New
York, upon the occasion of observing February 1-7, 2016, as National
Burn Awareness Week; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Burn Center at Westchester Medical Center.
