LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Anthony Utano upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by the Federation of Italian-Ameri-
can Organizations of Brooklyn, Ltd. on April 3, 2016

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Anthony Utano has given not only of his time and energies but
also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently has
been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Anthony Utano
upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by the
Federation of Italian-American Organizations of Brooklyn, Ltd., to be
celebrated at its 39th Annual Fund Raising Gala on Sunday, April 3,
2016, at El Caribe Country Club, Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Anthony Utano, affectionately known as Tony, has been called
upon to contribute his time and talents to countless civic and charita-
ble endeavors and has always given of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, Tony Utano is
Vice President of the 40,000-member Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local
100 where he covers the Maintenance of Way Division, the largest Depart-
ment of the Local with more than 8,000 workers; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he is Vice President of the International Trans-
port Workers Union of America, representing more than 125,000 members
nationwide, and has been elected a delegate to eight consecutive Inter-
national Conventions; and
WHEREAS, The longest serving elected official in TWU Local 100 histo-
ry, Tony Utano has been instrumental in the growth of the Maintenance of
Way Department from 6,000 members to more than 8,000 members today; and
WHEREAS, Tony Utano is a steadfast advocate for the training and
education of transit workers to acquire the skills necessary to qualify
for new, higher paying technical jobs in transit; he is currently
involved in a union campaign to fully fund a new five-year capital
construction plan for the MTA which will guarantee work for his members
for the years to come; and
WHEREAS, Active within the community he so ably serves, Tony Utano
founded the Annual Italian American Heritage Celebration in TWU Local
100 in 2005; he also served on Community Board 12, and coached youth
basketball for 20 years; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Tony Utano has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his son, Salvatore and his
daughter, Gina, both of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life
and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Tony Utano has displayed throughout
his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Anthony Utano upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the Federation of Italian-American Organizations of
Brooklyn, Ltd. on April 3, 2016; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Anthony Utano.
