LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Trina S. Newton upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2015 Citizen of the Year Award by the
Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor those illus-
trious individuals and institutions of the State of New York whose
purposeful endeavors serve to enhance the quality of life in their
communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend
Trina S. Newton on the occasion of her designation as the recipient of
the 2015 Citizen of the Year Award by the Geneva Area Chamber of
Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Trina S. Newton, Superintendent of the Geneva City School
District, was honored at the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce's annual
awards dinner held on Thursday, January 28th, 2016 at Club 86 in Geneva,
New York, for her efforts to expand language programs, improve student
achievement and increase the graduation rate; and
WHEREAS, The Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award
celebrates an individual who has unselfishly given to the community and
created a more dignified, unique place in which we all work and live;
and
WHEREAS, In 1987, Trina S. Newton received her Associate degree in
Math and Science from Jamestown Community College in Jamestown, New York
and, then attended the State University of New York (SUNY) College at
Fredonia where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education;
and
WHEREAS, Trina S. Newton continued her education by earning her
Masters in Science degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the SUNY
College at Fredonia in 1994 and eventually her C.A.S. in Education
Administration from the SUNY College at Brockport; and
WHEREAS, For eight years, Trina S. Newton taught seventh and eighth
grade Science in the Jamestown City School District, later becoming a
Staff Development Specialist and Coordinator of the School Improvement
Program at the Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES; and
WHEREAS, Trina S. Newton moved to Ithaca, New York, where she served
as Director of School Improvement Services for the Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga
BOCES; additionally, she was an Adjunct Professor in the Department of
Education at the SUNY College at Fredonia; and
WHEREAS, Currently, Trina S. Newton supervises all K-12 curriculum and
instructional programs and the development and implementation of the
District's strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the New York State
Standards and leading support teams to improving student achievement;
and
WHEREAS, In addition, Trina S. Newton oversees the development and
administration of grant funds, coordinates the District's Contract for
Excellence plan, and chairs committees responsible for student perform-
ance, Academic Intervention Services, professional development and annu-
al professional reviews; and
WHEREAS, An active contributor to her community, Trina S. Newton
serves on the Roberson Board of Trustees, Family Violence Prevention
Council and the Binghamton City Youth Advisory Board; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Trina S. Newton has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-

tion, it is appropriate to publicly proclaim and commend those individ-
uals for the edification and emulation of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Trina S. Newton on the occasion of her designation as the recipi-
ent of the 2015 Citizen of the Year Award by the Geneva Area Chamber of
Commerce; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Trina S. Newton.
