LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the Town
of Cherry Creek, New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the proud and distinguished histories of the people and communi-
ties which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concerns, and in full accord with its long-
standing tradition, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate
the 200th Anniversary of the settlement of the Town of Cherry Creek, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Joseph M. Kent built the first home in Cherry Creek in 1815
for his wife and seven children; it was located on what was originally
known as lot nine; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Cherry Creek was given its name by its second
settler, Joshua Bentley Jr., a surveyor for the Holland Land Company,
when he cut a red cherry sapling and drove it into the ground to mark
the township center; and
WHEREAS, In 1819, the first school, a log cabin with a fireplace for
heat, was erected, and Reuben Cheney was named its first teacher; and
WHEREAS, William Kilburn operated the first sawmill in the town,
opened in 1823, eventually adding a shop to produce spinning wheels and
chairs; and
WHEREAS, The CHERRY CREEK MONITOR became the first newspaper printed
in the town on June 30, 1883; the MONITOR would later be purchased by
Charles Schults, publisher of the PINE VALLEY NEWS, who combined the
papers into the CHERRY CREEK NEWS and continued publication for 16
years; and
WHEREAS, By 1900, Cherry Creek was a bustling community, full of
churches, schools, grocery and meat markets, factories for cheese and
butter, a canning factory, a milk plant, an iron foundry, and more; and
WHEREAS, Among its notable residents, the town was the birthplace of
Egburt E. Woodbury, who served as New York State Attorney General from
1915 to 1917 and Ozra Amander Hadley, Acting Governor of the State of
Arkansas from March 1871 to January 1873; and
WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of Supervisor William Young and
Town Councilmen James Abbey, Pete Smallback, Larry Johnson and Mark
Mansfield, the citizens of the Town of Cherry Creek proudly celebrate
this long and vibrant history, and look forward to its future; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize and commemorate milestones in the history of communities, both
large and small, in this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Town of Cherry Creek; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Town of Cherry Creek Supervisor William Young, and Town
Councilmen James Abbey, Pete Smallback, Larry Johnson and Mark Mans-
field.
