LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating the Salamanca Warriors Varsity
Football Team upon the occasion of completing its 100th Season
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones of those organizations in this great Empire State
that strive for success in their endeavors and make a positive impact on
their communities; and
WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can only be
achieved through strenuous practice, team play, and team spirit,
nurtured by dedicated coaching and strategic planning; for generations,
high school football has helped instill in student-athletes the values
of life -- perseverance, teamwork, sacrifice, dedication and respect for
authority; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late the Salamanca Warriors Varsity Football Team upon the occasion of
completing its 100th Season; and
WHEREAS, Few programs have demonstrated a commitment to excellence
like the program developed at the Salamanca City Central School
District; the Warriors Varsity Football Team has garnered more than 460
wins and, since 1982, has won nine Section VI Championships; and
WHEREAS, The athletic talent displayed by the program is due in great
part to the dedication and efforts of its line of storied head coaches;
among the noted leaders of the program is legendary Head Coach Joe
Sanfilippo, who led the Warriors program from 1957 to 1973; and
WHEREAS, Coach Sanfilippo posted a record of 95-33-4 while coaching at
Salamanca; he guided the team to four undefeated seasons in 1964, 1965,
1967 and 1971, and 11 championships in the then-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus
Interscholastic Athletic Conference and Division VI of the Section VI
Football Federation; and
WHEREAS, Coach George Whitcher, who succeeded Coach Sanfilippo as the
Head Coach from 1974 to 1998, went on to become the winningest coach in
the program history, with 167 career wins and also guided the program to
six Section VI Championships; currently, the Salamanca Warriors Varsity
Football Team is under the skilled leadership of Head Coach Paul Haley;
and
WHEREAS, The Salamanca Warriors Varsity Football program has been
comprised of many distinguished alumni, and the team has received numer-
ous Big 30 awards; among the ranks of the program's celebrated alumni
are Gary Sage (Class of 1960), the namesake of the Big 30's annual Play-
er of the Year award, and Louis C. Foy, former Salamanca Athletic Direc-
tor and track and field coach, for whom the Big 30's annual Defensive
Player of the Year award is named; and
WHEREAS, Warrior team members have been recipients of numerous Big 30
awards; recipients of the Gary Sage Memorial Award include: Bob Nugent
(1965), Chuck Crist (1967), Jeff Davis (1970), Dan Dry (1977), T.J. Brol
(1990), and Dustin Ross (2001); recipients of the Lou Foy Memorial Award
for Defensive Player of the Year include: Arron Whitmore (1989), Jason
Siafakas (1999), and Justin Hager (2004); recipients of the Alfred Joe
Bunnell Memorial Award for Coach of the Year include: Joe Sanfilippo
(1964 and 1971), George Whitcher (1982 and 1993), Rich Morton (2001),
and Jason Marsh (2011); recipients of the E.B. Fitzpatrick Memorial
Award for Unsung Lineman of the Year include: Jay Haley (1982), Don John
(1984), Ray Haley (1986), Chris Gillfillan (1987), and Jeremy John
(1992); and the 1998 Warrior team was awarded the Leon Abbott Memorial
Award for School Sportsmanship; and
WHEREAS, Athletically and academically, the team members have proven
themselves to be an unbeatable combination of talents, reflecting favor-
ably on their school; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those organizations and high school scholar-athletes that have
achieved notable success in this great Empire State; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the Salamanca Warriors Varsity Football Team upon the occa-
sion of completing its 100th Season; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Head Coach Paul Haley, Salamanca Warriors Varsity Football
Team.
