LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dermot Moore upon the occasion of his
selection as Grand Marshal of the Annual Rockland County St. Patrick's
Day Parade on March 20, 2016

WHEREAS, St. Patrick's Day is a time for people of all nationalities and
generations to assemble and celebrate the rich culture and heritage of
the Irish people throughout these United States; and
WHEREAS, A St. Patrick's Day Parade reflects and records the ongoing
history of the United States and Ireland, and highlights the many
contributions and historical accomplishments of the Irish community in
this diverse land; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dermot Moore
upon the occasion of his selection as Grand Marshal of the Annual Rock-
land County St. Patrick's Day Parade, to be celebrated on Sunday, March
20, 2016, in the Hamlet of of Pearl River, New York; and
WHEREAS, Dermot Moore was one of eight children born to the former
Mary Holt and the late Thomas Aquinas Moore; raised in the Bronx, he
attended Holy Family Elementary School, and the Bronx High School of
Science; after graduating, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Criminal
Justice from Iona College; and
WHEREAS, In July of 1981, Dermot Moore joined the New York Police
Department (NYPD); he rose through the ranks, attaining the title of
Sergeant, Supervisor Detective Squad, a position from which he official-
ly retired in December of 2002; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Pearl River, Dermot Moore currently holds the
title of Vice President in corporate security; and
WHEREAS, Dermot Moore has been called upon to contribute his time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, For 10 years, Dermot Moore has served as President of John
Cardinal D'Alton Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Division 3; under his
luminous leadership, the unit has grown to be the largest Division in
the United States and has made tremendous progress towards fulfilling
its purpose of promoting and perpetuating Irish culture between them-
selves, their children, and their community; working for the freedom of
Ireland, and upholding the constitution of the United States, as well as
working for the glory of God; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure, the Division instituted an Irish-Amer-
ican heritage examination as part of its scholarship program and has
increased its scholarship awards to $10,000 yearly; in addition, The
Hibernian House provides a home for students of piping and Irish danc-
ing, and the Division hosts numerous Irish cultural activities that are
open to all free of charge, including a highly popular film series on
the lives of the signatories of the 1916 proclamation; and
WHEREAS, The members of the Division strive to live up to the Hiberni-
an motto of "Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity"; under Dermot
Moore's presidency the Division remains an active advocate and sponsor
for the elderly, veterans, the young and the physically and mentally
challenged citizens of its community; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, The Division and Hibernian House are major contrib-
utors to the Venture Foundation, the GAA, and numerous local charities
as well as national AOH charities; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to the well-being of his community, Dermot Moore
led relief efforts after Superstorm Sandy, repairing homes in Breezy
Point and organizing deliveries of food, tools, and clothing to multiple
affected areas; and

WHEREAS, Intensely proud of his Hibernianism as well as his Division
and its efforts to live up to its purpose and motto, Dermot Moore was
recently elected as New York State AOH District 8 AOH Director; and
WHEREAS, Dermot Moore's Irish-American roots run deep; his mother is a
Gaelic scholar, past Grand Marshal of the New York City St. Patrick's
Day, and direct descendant of the leader of the Wicklow rebels in 1798,
General Joseph Holt; she named Dermot in honor of 1916 leader Sean MacD-
iarmada and her uncle Sam O'Reilly who fought in the GPO; and
WHEREAS, Dermot Moore's father was born in County Kerry and was a
member of the New York City Fire Department Emerald Society and was a
President of AOH Division 3 in the Bronx; and
WHEREAS, For over 40 years, Dermot Moore has enjoyed playing the
bagpipes with the Kerry Pipers; he is also a member of the NYPD Emerald
Society and the Bronx Gaelic League; and
WHEREAS, For his incredible service to the Irish-American community,
Dermot Moore was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades by
numerous organizations including 2010 Hibernian of the Year by the Rock-
land County AOH, and 2014 Rockland Irish Northern Aid Man of the Year,
as well as a 2015 Community Service Award by the Rockland County Friend-
ly Sons of St. Patrick; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man also gives freely of his time and talents
at many events for the GAA, Irish Northern Aid, St. Margaret's Church,
LAOH and numerous other organizations and causes; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Dermot Moore has stood constant in
dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Joan, and their four
children, Thomas Ashe (Colleen), Terence MacSweeney, Conor Naughton and
Margaret O'Rourke, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life
and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Dermot Moore truly embodies the spirit and the cherished
ideals and values of Irish-Americans of this great State and nation; it
is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individuals of such
noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention, they should
be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of the great State of
New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dermot Moore upon the occasion of his selection as Grand Marshal
of the 2016 Rockland County St. Patrick's Day Parade; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dermot Moore.
