LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring The Canny Brothers Band upon the occa-
sion of their selection as Deputy Marshals of the Annual Bay Ridge St.
Patrick's Day Parade on March 20, 2016
WHEREAS, St. Patrick's Day is a time for people of all nationalities and
generations to assemble and celebrate the rich culture and heritage of
the Irish people throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, A St. Patrick's Day parade reflects and records the ongoing
history of the United States and Ireland, and provides opportunity for
people of all generations to assemble in ethnic pride and pageantry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor The
Canny Brothers Band upon the occasion of their selection as Deputy
Marshals of the Annual Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday,
March 20, 2016; and
WHEREAS, One St. Patrick's Day evening, it was noted that there was no
live Irish music to be listened to in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn; henceforth, a
local Brooklyn band was created to play Irish tunes to celebrate the
wonderful cultural heritage of Ireland; and
WHEREAS, The Canny Brothers Band has become one of the premier Irish
American bands on the New York City music scene; the lively and energet-
ic band regularly plays festivals, parties, and pubs, as well as venues
in East Durham, New York, located in the Catskill Mountains; and
WHEREAS, Through the years, The Canny Brothers Band has released three
well-reviewed albums, including original material, which have gotten
national radio airplay and international notice; and
WHEREAS, Even though it can be a challenge juggling music, family, and
careers, the members of the Band enjoy sharing their beloved Irish
songs, and celebrating their Brooklyn roots; and
WHEREAS, The three brothers who comprise The Canny Brothers Band
include Stephen, Thomas, and Michael, attended St. Ephrem's Parish in
Dyker Heights and have Irish roots from County Mayo on both sides of
their family; and
WHEREAS, The Canny brothers are very proud of their children Sarah,
Michael Shane, Cate, Julia and Joe and very lucky to have such support-
ive wives as Claudia, Susan and Chrisie; and
WHEREAS, When they are not playing music, Stephen Canny holds the
position of Vice President at BNY Mellon, Tom Canny serves as a Senior
Vice President at Citibank, and Michael Canny is Director of Technology
at Columbia University; and
WHEREAS, Other members of the band include lead vocalist, Keith
Fallon, who is also from St. Ephrem's Parish and has Irish roots from
County Armagh and County Roscommon; he and his lovely wife, Kate, have
three daughters, Willow, Violet, and Lyric; Keith is a Sergeant in the
New York State Courts and was the Grand Knight of the Sheridan Council
Knights of Columbus; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Bayes plays both keyboards and bass and is a cousin of
the aforementioned brothers; he is a long time Verizon Technician, and
lives in Bay Ridge with his wonderful wife, Stephanie and daughter,
Emma; and
WHEREAS, Drummer Mick Bauer is originally from Queens but has lived in
Bay Ridge for over 20 years; he has Irish roots from County Cork and has
the support of his lovely wife Barbara; he currently serves as a health
benefits administrator at the American Federation of Musicians, Local
802; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to the community in which they live and work, The
Canny Brothers Band has participated in fundraising efforts for charity
causes such as the Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade Scholarship
Committee, Quinn for the Win, the Make a Wish Foundation, KeenanStrong,
the Aisling Irish Community Center, the Wounded Warrior Project, as well
as benefits for Thailand Tsunami and Hurricane Sandy victims, and many
others; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by individuals
for the benefit of others which the members of The Canny Brothers Band
have displayed throughout their lives; and
WHEREAS, A fitting choice for Deputy Marshals of the Annual Bay Ridge
St. Patrick's Day Parade, The Canny Brothers Band embodies the spirit
and the cherished ideals and values of Irish Americans of this great
State and Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor The Canny Brothers Band upon the occasion of their selection as
Deputy Marshal of the Annual Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade on March
20, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Canny Brothers Band.
