LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating student-athlete Kevin Huerter upon
the occasion of being named Mr. New York State Basketball by the Basket-
ball Coaches Association of New York

WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved
only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit, nurtured by
dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and
WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical develop-
ment of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by
instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of
healthy living, imparting a desire for success and developing a sense of
fair play and competition; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those young people within the State of New York who, by
achieving outstanding success in athletic competition, have inspired and
brought pride to their school and community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late student-athlete Kevin Huerter upon the occasion of being named Mr.
New York State Basketball by the Basketball Coaches Association of New
York on Wednesday, March 9, 2016; and
WHEREAS, An integral part of the Shenendehowa Boys Varsity Basketball
Team, senior Kevin Huerter has displayed outstanding athletic skill,
tremendous dedication and exemplary sportsmanship, and consequently was
selected for New York State's highest individual honor in basketball;
and
WHEREAS, During the 2015-2016 season, Kevin Huerter averaged 22.5
points per game, 8.3 rebounds per game and 7.2 assists per game, becom-
ing the second all-time leading scorer for Shenendehowa and its all-time
assists leader, as well as the fourth player in school history to
surpass the 1,000-point mark; and
WHEREAS, A three-year Captain, this esteemed young athlete played for
four years on the Plainsmen varsity squad and was named MVP of the 2015
NYSPHSAA Championship team; he is also only the second Section II or
Shenendehowa player to ever be named Mr. New York State Basketball; and
WHEREAS, Known for his exceptional talent and unselfishness on and off
the court, Kevin Huerter plans on continuing his basketball career at
the University of Maryland; and
WHEREAS, The athletic talent displayed by Kevin Huerter is due in
great part to the efforts of Coach Tony Dzikas, a skilled and inspira-
tional tutor, respected for their ability to develop potential into
excellence; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Huerter's overall high school career has been outstand-
ing, and he was loyally and enthusiastically supported by family, fans,
friends and the community at large; and
WHEREAS, Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride and
accomplishment, and Kevin Huerter has clearly made a contribution to the
spirit of excellence which is a tradition of his school; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate student-athlete Kevin Huerter upon the occasion of being
named Mr. New York State Basketball by the Basketball Coaches Associ-
ation of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Kevin Huerter.
