LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Sister Deirdre Mullan, RSM, PhD upon
the occasion of her designation for special recognition by the Sisters
of Mercy on May 10, 2016
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those individ-
uals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its
citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Sister Deirdre Mullan, RSM, PhD upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by the Sisters of Mercy to be celebrated at its 17th
Annual Evening of Mercy Gala on May 10, 2016, at The Yale Club of New
York City; and
WHEREAS, The Sisters of Mercy work passionately to eliminate poverty,
the widespread denial of human rights, the degradation of earth, the
increase in violence and racism, the continued oppression of women, the
abuse of children, the mistreatment of immigrants and the lack of soli-
darity among people and nations; and
WHEREAS, A National of Ireland, Sister Deirdre Mullan comes from Derry
in Northern Ireland, where she served as a teacher for over 20 years;
and
WHEREAS, Involved in Education for Mutual Understanding, Sister Deir-
dre Mullan coordinated the Dance Beyond Hate, working with students from
across the divide in Northern Ireland in an effort to teach tolerance
and acceptance of difference; and
WHEREAS, Sister Deirdre Mullan held the esteemed position of Executive
Director of the Sisters of Mercy office at the United Nations for 10
years before assuming her present role as a liaison to UNICEF in the
Partnering with Religious Congregations office in New York; and
WHEREAS, In this capacity, Sister Deirdre Mullan enthusiastically
worked to raise significant funds to bring Sisters of Mercy from across
the globe through the Bridging the Gap between Policy and Practice
program; and
WHEREAS, Sister Deirdre Mullan earned her PhD in the Feminization of
Poverty and is actively involved in girls education working closely with
the Mercy Secondary Network; she also coordinated the building of
schools, and provided scholarships and safe water to residents of Cambo-
dia, Sudan, Peru, Zambia and Kenya as well as Nigeria; and
WHEREAS, A passionate educator, Sister Deirdre Mullan is closely
involved in the Education Under Attack Office at the United Nations,
where she closely monitors the rising tide of attacks on girls attending
school; and
WHEREAS, An accomplished author, Sister Deirdre Mullan has published
several booklets and has given lectures all over the world; her most
recent publication, THE MERCY GPS - OUR GLOBAL POSITIONING FOR 2016 has
sold over 62,000 copies; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Sister Deirdre Mullan, RSM, PhD upon the occasion of her desig-
nation for special recognition by the Sisters of Mercy on May 10, 2016;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sister Deirdre Mullan, RSM, PhD.
