LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the City
of Sherrill on April 7, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the proud and distinguished histories of the cities, towns and
villages which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the City of Sherrill on Thursday, April
7, 2016; and
WHEREAS, The region known today as Sherrill, New York, has long been a
manufacturing area; the first settlers came in 1816 and lived in the
northern area which was then known as Turkey Street; they engaged in
various manufacturing projects through the succeeding years; and
WHEREAS, In 1848, approximately 200 members of a society known as the
Oneida Community, led by John Humphrey Noyes, settled at Kenwood, south
of the hamlet; the community grew until 1880 when this experiment in
communal living was ended and a joint stock company was founded, taking
over all assets of the community; and
WHEREAS, The population increased gradually and was greatly expanded
by the purchase of a silverware manufacturing company brought to the
area from Niagara Falls in 1912; farm lands were broken into building
lots and the present city began to take form; and
WHEREAS, The name Sherrill was chosen for the first Post Office by
James Sherman, representative of the 33rd Congressional District; he
chose the name, Sherrill, after his son Sherrill Sherman; and
WHEREAS, Local citizens were interested in having a city charter as
they believed city government would be more beneficial and effective
than a village or town government; on April 7, 1916, Sherrill was grant-
ed a city charter by a special act of the state legislature; and
WHEREAS, The City of Sherrill includes the former hamlet of Sherrill
and the area of Kenwood which lies in Oneida County; the charter estab-
lished a City Manager form of government which provides for the election
of a Commission; the Commissioners then appoint a Commissioner to be
Mayor, and the Commissioners appoint the City Manager as the Chief Exec-
utive of the City; and
WHEREAS, Through its long and sustained commitment to the ideals and
principles upon which this beloved Nation was first founded, the City of
Sherrill, New York, has so unselfishly advanced that spirit of united
purpose and shared concern which is the unalterable manifestation of our
American experience; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the City of Sherrill on April 7,
2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the City of Sherrill.
