LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Corning Meals on Wheels upon the occa-
sion of celebrating its 50th Anniversary on April 12, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Corning Meals on Wheels upon the occasion of commemorating its 50th
Anniversary at a Celebration and Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on
Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at The Radisson Hotel, Corning, New York; and
WHEREAS, Corning Meals on Wheels has served the interests of the
people of the Empire State by providing sustenance and support to
seniors in need for 50 years; and
WHEREAS, Recognizing that many older adults in their community needed
meals delivered to their homes, Penny Rochester and her friends at
Christ Episcopal Church formed Corning Meals on Wheels as a program of
the Corning Vicinity Council of Churches; and
WHEREAS, On March 7, 1966, six residents from the Corning area
received the first deliveries of a hot lunch and a cold supper; every-
thing from cooking to paperwork was done in the kitchen at Christ Epis-
copal Church; and
WHEREAS, In 1979, Corning Meals on Wheels formed its own non-profit
corporation with Elizabeth (Penny) M. Rochester, Delphine Pierri, Edith
Treinin, Mary Heermans, Richard Wheeler, Phyllis Bruielly, Maureen Heat-
ley, Marjorie Lobdell, Mabel Schmarder, Catherine Hoxle, and Louise
Maloney serving as the first Directors; and
WHEREAS, As this important service grew to meet the increasing needs
of its community, Corning Meals on Wheels added operating locations at
both St. Mary's Parish in Corning, and the Imperial Club in Painted
Post, New York; almost three decades ago, the organization consolidated
all operations under one roof at the First United Methodist Church of
Corning; and
WHEREAS, Today, under the luminous leadership of President, The Right
Reverend Ian Adkins, ASC, D.D., Corning Meals on Wheels is comprised of
200 dedicated volunteers who prepare and deliver nourishing meals to the
homebound and frail each weekday; in 2015, these remarkable individuals
delivered 51,809 meals, making a difference in the lives of 256 area
seniors; and
WHEREAS, This occasion presents an opportunity for this Legislative
Body to recognize and pay tribute to Corning Meals on Wheels in cele-
bration of its growth and the tremendous service it provides; and
WHEREAS, In so effectively carrying out its mission, Corning Meals on
Wheels has demonstrated the inestimable value of improving the quality
of life for New York State's aging residents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Corning Meals on Wheels upon the occasion of celebrating its
50th Anniversary, and to wish this worthy organization continued
success; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Right Reverend Ian Adkins, ASC, D.D., President, Corning
Meals on Wheels.
