LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Harry and Anne Rosenfeld upon the occa-
sion of their designation as recipients of the Pillars of the Community
Award by the Sidney Albert Albany Jewish Community Center

WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Harry and Anne
Rosenfeld upon the occasion of their designation as recipients of the
Pillars of the Community Award by the Sidney Albert Albany Jewish Commu-
nity Center, to be celebrated at its 16th Annual Pillars of the Communi-
ty Awards Brunch on Sunday, April 17, 2016, at Congregation Beth Abraham
Jacob, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Each year, this prestigious awards ceremony recognizes indi-
viduals for their contributions to the Center and the Jewish community-
at-large by acting as moral pillars and dispensers of wisdom and advice,
providing continued service and leadership, and acting generously in the
spirit of Tzedakah; and
WHEREAS, Harry Rosenfeld was born in Berlin, Germany, on August 12,
1929, and immigrated with his family to the United States in May of
1939; he honorably served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954
during the Korean War; he married Anne Hahn in 1953, just weeks before
he was sent overseas; and
WHEREAS, Harry Rosenfeld, as editor-at-large, is a consultant to the
TIMES UNION and a member of its editorial board; in 1997, he retired
from the paper, which he had served as editor and editor-at-large since
1978, and until 1988 he was also editor of the KNICKERBOCKER NEWS;
during his tenure, the paper achieved its record circulation; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, in 2013, he published his autobiography, FROM
KRISTALLNACHT TO WATERGATE: MEMOIRS OF A NEWSPAPERMAN; the book was
awarded two Bronze Medals; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, Harry Rosenfeld was appointed to three
consecutive Cameras in the Courts Review Committees in New York State,
the sole member so selected; for 12 years he was elected vice chairman
of the NYS Conference on Fair Trial Free press and on retirement was
made vice chair emeritus; he was chosen four times to serve as juror to
select submissions for Pulitzer prizes; and
WHEREAS, Before coming to Albany, Harry Rosenfeld was an assistant
managing editor of THE WASHINGTON POST, during which time he earned the
newspaper a Pulitzer gold medal for public service; he was cited by the
Associated Press in its Freedom of Information Award for his role in the
Watergate coverage and received the First Amendment Award of the Anti-
Defamation League of B'nai B'rith in Los Angeles; and
WHEREAS, Harry Rosenfeld then began his newspaper career at THE NEW
YORK HERALD TRIBUNE and eventually served as managing editor of that
paper's news service and as foreign editor of the paper; for a brief
time, he was an associate producer at CBS News; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed man has received numerous awards and recogni-
tions including Distinguished Alumni Award from Syracuse University's
College of Arts and Sciences; first prize for his weekly column from the
NYS Associated Press Association; Media Responsibility Award from the
NYS Martin Luther King Jr. Commission and Institute for Non-Violence;
Maimonides School's Dr. Morton Berger Memorial Award; University of
Albany's School of Social Welfare Distinguished Public Service Award,

and an honorary doctorate of humane letters by the College of Saint
Rose; and
WHEREAS, Prior to coming to Albany, Anne Rosenfeld served as vice
president of her Reform congregation, taught pre-school and was a very
active member of the community; upon arrival in Albany, she was asked to
assist an effort by the Federation to work with SUNY Albany faculty and
students, which subsequently led to the formation of a Hillel chapter;
and
WHEREAS, Anne Rosenfeld's interest in the arts was heightened by her
work with the Albany League of Arts, and for many years she served as
board member, vice president and co-president of the Institute for Arts
and Education; the Institute's programs brought arts, literature, archi-
tecture, dance and drama into regional schools, bringing together crea-
tive practitioners with teachers and students; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to her community, Anne Rosenfeld volunteered for
Wildwood Programs, where she was instrumental in the establishment and
success of its garden show; she also served on the University at Albany
Foundation Board, advocating for arts and humanities programs and
expanding its board membership as a member of its nominating committee;
and
WHEREAS, In addition, she served on the board of B'nai B'rith Senior
Housing, helping to shape a comfortable environment for the elderly; she
also currently volunteers with the Jewish Federation's ROAR reading
program; and
WHEREAS, Residents of Albany, Harry and Anne Rosenfeld are the parents
of Susan, Amy and Stefanie, and they have seven grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by individuals
for the benefit of others which Harry and Anne Rosenfeld have displayed
throughout their lives; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Harry and Anne Rosenfeld upon the occasion of their designation as
recipients of the Pillars of the Community Award by the Sidney Albert
Albany Jewish Community Center; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Harry and Anne Rosenfeld.
