LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Laurie Scheinman upon the occasion of
her designation for special recognition by Residents for a More Beauti-
ful Port Washington
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality and
character of life in the communities of New York State are reflective of
the concerned and dedicated efforts of organizations and individuals who
devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Laurie Scheinman upon the occasion of her designation for special recog-
nition by Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington to be cele-
brated at its Annual Gala Dinner on Friday, April 8, 2016, at Leonard's
of Great Neck in Great Neck, New York; and
WHEREAS, Since 1968, Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington
has been dedicated to creating a strong, unified and sustainable commu-
nity in Port Washington, New York, and its surrounding areas; and
WHEREAS, Each year, at its Annual Gala, Residents for a More Beautiful
Port Washington proudly honors those individuals who have worked to
support its mission of helping to make Port Washington an outstanding
community in which to live and work; and
WHEREAS, A respected Child and Family Therapist with close to 30 years
of experience serving her community, Laurie Scheinman is the owner of
Wit & Whim, a philanthropic gift boutique she founded in Port Washington
in 2012; and
WHEREAS, As owner of Wit & Whim, Laurie Scheinman has created "a
little store with a big heart" offering one-of-a-kind modern, vintage,
handcrafted and Americana goods with 100% of profits being donated to a
different local charity each month; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to helping others, Laurie Scheinman's store is also
extremely generous with donations of raffle and auction gifts for the
many charitable events that take place in Port Washington each year; and
WHEREAS, In December of 2015, this esteemed woman hosted a heartwarm-
ing "Hands Across the Water" holiday window display initiative where she
encouraged participation from 80 elementary schools and senior citizen
centers, and invited contributors from the Port Washington Senior Citi-
zens Center for lunch in her shop and to view the lovely displays; and
WHEREAS, Laurie Scheinman has been called upon to contribute her time
and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of herself unstintingly; she has served as a benefactor and member
of the Board of Advisors of the Scheinman Institute on Conflict Resol-
ution, a consultant to the Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth Network and
helped develop the Long Island Children's Museum Tot Spot; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Laurie serves on the Board of Directors of the
Port Washington Chamber of Commerce and is a Lion Benefactor for the UJA
Federation; she is also a passionate supporter of local artists, hosting
events and art exhibits to display their work; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and honors, Laurie Scheinman
is a 2015 May Newburger Women's Roll of Honor inductee, and her store
received national recognition as one of HOME ACCENT TODAY magazine's 50
Retail Stars for 2015 and by 1010 WINS radio as one of New York's 50
best small businesses; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Marty, and their
five children, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and
rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Laurie Scheinman upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by Residents for a More Beautiful Port Washington; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Laurie Scheinman.
