LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Early Childhood Director Barbara Flack
upon the occasion of her retirement after 18 years of distinguished
service to the North Shore Synagogue

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals in the teaching profession who distinguish
themselves in their dedication and commitment to their students; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Early Childhood Director Barbara Flack upon the occasion of her retire-
ment after 18 years of distinguished service to the North Shore Syna-
gogue to be feted with a Bon Voyage Barbara Celebration on Saturday, May
21, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Flack was working as a Camp Counselor at Woodmere
Academy when she and a colleague decided to open a nursery school in her
home; and
WHEREAS, One mother, whose daughter was a student of Barbara Flack,
was on the Board of the Jewish Center of Atlantic Beach; the new rabbi
at the Center was interested in starting a nursery school and chose
Barbara to help him to first create it and then to serve as Director;
she served for 13 years before leaving in 1997; and
WHEREAS, When her youngest child went off to college, Barbara Flack
left Old Bethpage and drove across the country to Venice, California,
where she worked in a pre-school at Temple Mishkan Tefilah; and
WHEREAS, Although California was nice, Barbara Flack missed her chil-
dren and returned to New York; it was then she began her illustrious
career with the North Shore Synagogue; and
WHEREAS, Barbara Flack's goals have always been aligned with the goals
of the Synagogue, to provide a warm, understanding, nurturing and mean-
ingful environment for all; and
WHEREAS, With the trust and partnership of her dedicated staff,
Barbara Flack has succeeded in providing years of a successful, engaging
and high quality Early Childhood Program; and
WHEREAS, Educators like Barbara Flack provide a tremendous service to
the future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of young
people in their educational journeys and ensuring success in their
future years; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her partner, Steve Vitoff, her
three children, Brian (Hayley), Jenny (Jeff), and Ali (Ryan), and seven
grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and
rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Early Childhood Director Barbara Flack upon the occasion of her
retirement after 18 years of distinguished service to the North Shore
Synagogue, and to wish her continued success in all her future endeav-
ors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Barbara Flack.
