LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Mabel MP Cheng, MD upon the occasion of
her designation as recipient of the 2016 Professional of the Year Award
by the Northeastern Association of the Blind at Albany on April 16, 2016
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those individuals within the medical field who distinguish
themselves through professional excellence and who have made significant
contributions to the quality of life of citizens in the State of New
York; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Mabel MP
Cheng, MD upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2016
Professional of the Year Award by the Northeastern Association of the
Blind at Albany, to be celebrated at its Annual Visionary Gala, on
Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the Franklin Plaza Ballroom in Troy, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Since 1908, the Northeastern Association of the Blind at
Albany (NABA) has provided comprehensive services and programs to resi-
dents of the greater Capital Region who are blind or visually impaired;
in 2015, they helped over 900 individuals of all ages across 11 counties
adapt to vision loss, maximize remaining vision, achieve their goals,
and expand their independence; and
WHEREAS, In addition, NABA offered screenings to over 3,300 children
between 18 months and five years of age for possible vision problems;
and
WHEREAS, A board certified ophthalmologist specializing in medical and
surgical care of the eyes, Dr. Mabel Cheng has been providing cutting
edge ophthalmic care to patients of the Capital Region for over 25
years; and
WHEREAS, As part of her commitment to her patients and her community,
Dr. Mabel Cheng and the NABA have been working closely together to help
those who require vision rehabilitation or low vision assistance main-
tain their visual independence; and
WHEREAS, Mabel Cheng earned both her Master of Science and Master of
Philosophy degrees in Nutritional Lipid Biochemistry from Columbia
University; and
WHEREAS, She then furthered her education by obtaining her Doctor of
Medicine degree from the University of California at Davis, where she
also did her internship; she then returned to New York, where she
successfully completed her residency in ophthalmology at Albany Medical
Center; and
WHEREAS, After completing her residency, Dr. Mabel Cheng held the
esteemed title of Chief Ophthalmic Surgeon at Community Care Physicians
(CHP) and later Kaiser Permanente before entering private practice in
1999; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her thriving private practice, Dr. Mabel Cheng
holds the position of Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Albany
Medical College; in this capacity, she has trained and mentored numerous
residents over the past 20 years and serves as the advisor to Albany
Medical College's Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association
(APAMSA); and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Dr. Mabel Cheng is the President of the Albany
Chapter of the Chinese American Medical Society (CAMS); through these
vital organizations, she has spearheaded numerous health fairs with
Albany Medical College's students, giving them critical clinical expo-
sure outside of the classroom while also increasing public awareness of
ocular diseases; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Dr. Mabel Cheng has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, As a leader in her profession, Dr. Mabel Cheng has proven
herself to be a great asset to medicine and to the health and welfare of
the citizens of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Mabel MP Cheng, MD upon the occasion of her designation as recipi-
ent of the 2016 Professional of the Year Award by the Northeastern Asso-
ciation of the Blind at Albany; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mabel MP Cheng, MD.
