LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 30th Anniversary of the Sham-
rock Scramble 5K Road Race in Wallkill, New York, on March 20, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions, events and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 30th Anniversary of the Shamrock Scramble 5K Road Race in the
hamlet of Wallkill, New York; this auspicious occasion was celebrated on
Sunday, March 20, 2016; and
WHEREAS, The annual Shamrock Scramble is one of the longest-running
races in the area and tends to draw between 600 and 800 participants; it
is the first race of the year for many snow-bound runners and walkers
who look forward to the 3.1 mile flat, downhill course; and
WHEREAS, With its enthusiastic volunteers, dedicated sponsors, and
cheering spectators, the Shamrock Scramble 5K Road Race was established
30 years ago as a way of giving back to the community; Race Director Bob
Garrison, has worked on the event since its inception; and
WHEREAS, Entry fees and proceeds collected through sponsorships from
at least three dozen businesses are donated to local charities; past
recipients include the Wallkill High School Scholarship Fund, the Fire
Department and Rescue Squad, a food pantry and Habitat for Humanity; and
WHEREAS, The Shamrock Scramble 5K Road Race includes a walking event,
the 5K run and a kids' race with cash prizes going to the first-place
finisher and the top masters finisher of each gender; medals are awarded
to age-group leaders and if a course record is established, an addi-
tional cash prize is awarded; and
WHEREAS, Derek Lake won the men's race in 15 minutes, 15 seconds, a
new course record, and Marisa Suterastrange won the women's race, plac-
ing 12th overall in 18:19; Robert Harles won the walker's race in 31:20;
and
WHEREAS, This auspicious anniversary, along with its post-race cele-
bration, presents a unique opportunity for this Legislative Body to
recognize and pay tribute to the Shamrock Scramble 5K Road Race; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when organiza-
tions of such noble aims and accomplishments, and which serve to bring
people together for such glorious purposes, are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Shamrock Scramble 5K Road Race
in Wallkill, New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Director Bob Garrison, Shamrock Scramble 5K Road Race.
