LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim May 14, 2016, as Train Day in the State of New York in conjunc-
tion with the observance of National Train Day

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those note-
worthy organizations within the United States and this great Empire
State whose focus and intent have made a substantial impact on the qual-
ity of life in their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to memorial-
ize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim May 14, 2016, as Train Day in
the State of New York, in conjunction with the observance of National
Train Day
WHEREAS, Celebrated annually on the Saturday closest to May 10th,
National Train Day is a holiday started by Amtrak in 2008, as a method
to teach the general public about the advantages of rail travel and the
history of trains; events are held at Amtrak stations as well as rail-
road museums throughout the country where the public can view passenger
cars and model railroad layouts on display; and
WHEREAS, In addition, many local train clubs host various events and
activities to commemorate this special occasion; and
WHEREAS, A form of rail transport, trains are categorized by how their
locomotives are powered, their use, and by the design of their tracks;
today's trains can transport both cargo and passengers to their destina-
tions at a top speed of 350 mph; and
WHEREAS, National Train Day marks 147 years of connecting travelers
coast to coast; on May 10, 1869, in Promontory, Utah, the "golden spike"
was driven into the final tie that joined 1,776 miles of the Central
Pacific and Union Pacific railways, transforming America by creating the
Nation's first transcontinental railroad; and
WHEREAS, This monumental event united the country and provided adven-
ture for businessmen who saw fortunes to be made, created jobs for thou-
sands of Americans, and sparked the creative imaginations of storytel-
lers in songs, movies, and novels; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body commends
Railroads nationwide for their excellence and for their commitment and
contributions to the communities they have so ably served; now, there-
fore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim May 14, 2016, as Train
Day in the State of New York in conjunction with the observance of
National Train Day; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
