LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Dennis Marcus upon the occasion of
his designation for special recognition by the Columbia County Community
Service Board

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality of life in the communities across this great State of New York
is enriched by the diligence and compassionate commitment of those indi-
viduals whose singular purpose is the care and welfare of others; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Dennis Marcus upon the occasion of his designation for special recogni-
tion by the Columbia County Community Service Board at its 16th Annual
Dinner; and
WHEREAS, Each year, the Columbia County Community Service Board recog-
nizes an individual or individuals who have influenced the care and
treatment of those who are struggling with mental illness, chemical
dependency or developmental disabilities; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Marcus was born in New York City and raised in Kato-
nah, New York; he attended John Jay High School where he liked to say he
played football, however briefly, played the trombone in the marching
band, and sang acappella; and
WHEREAS, He gained admission to Syracuse University and declared duel
majors in English Literature and Psychology; two years into his studies,
he changed to Pre Med; a gifted student, he graduated from Syracuse
University in three years; and
WHEREAS, Dennis Marcus attended the University of Louisville School of
Medicine; he then completed a two-year pediatric residency at Albany
Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, For three consecutive summers, Dr. Dennis Marcus interned and
then became the Program Director for the Appalacian Project in Tennes-
see; he also organized the notorious Sneedville River Boat Race; and
WHEREAS, When his passion became child psychiatry, Dr. Dennis Marcus
moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he completed a two-year
residency in adult psychiatry at the UNC School of Medicine; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Dennis Marcus did a two-year residency in child psychia-
try at the Boston Children's Hospital Medical Center/ Judge Baker Guid-
ance Center of Harvard Medical School; and
WHEREAS, Following these many years of education, Dr. Dennis Marcus
moved to the Berkshires which had always been his family summertime
camping destination; he began his working career at Kolburne School in
New Marlborough, Massachusetts; and
WHEREAS, He was invited to represent the Berkshires as a participating
member of the Governor's Commission on Mental Health State Advisory
Council and did so for five years; he worked at Main Street Human
Resources in Great Barrington, Massachusetts; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Dennis Marcus began a private practice, and in 1987
incorporated South County Psychiatric and Psychotherapy Center as the
smallest and most personally tended DPH licensed outpatient mental
health clinic in Massachusetts; and
WHEREAS, By 1998, Dr. Dennis Marcus had recognized and began to fill a
need for psychiatric services in New York, first in an outpatient office
in Valatie; and
WHEREAS, As the years went on, he discovered Columbia Memorial Hospi-
tal and was devoted to providing both outpatient and inpatient services;
and
WHEREAS, In the faithful performance of his duties and responsibil-
ities, Dr. Dennis Marcus' ongoing efforts and notable achievements have

significantly contributed to bettering the quality of life in his commu-
nity; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure, he continuously displays initiative
and an unrelenting commitment when pursuing the highest of goals, and he
serves as a role model of leadership to be emulated by all; now, there-
fore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Dennis Marcus upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the Columbia County Community Service Board; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Dennis Marcus.
