LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Michael R. Long upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2016 Civic Award by the Bay Ridge Commu-
nity Council
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in communities across New York State are
reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organizations
and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the commu-
nity and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Michael R. Long upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
2016 Civic Award by the Bay Ridge Community Council to be celebrated at
its 65th Annual Dinner Dance on Thursday, June 2, 2016, in Brooklyn, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Myra and Michael Long, Michael
R. Long attended Richmond Hill High School in Queens, New York; after
graduation, he proudly served his country as a member of the United
States Marine Corps; and
WHEREAS, After his honorable discharge in 1961, Michael R. Long owned
and operated a small business in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, for numerous
years; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man has been called upon to contribute his
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Interested in politics, Michael R. Long served as a volunteer
for United States Senator Barry Goldwater's campaign for President of
the United States in 1964; and
WHEREAS, In 1975, Michael R. Long was elected to one term as the
Chairman of Community School Board 19 in Brooklyn, and in 1981, he
participated on the New York City Council, representing the borough of
Brooklyn for two years; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to his community, Michael R. Long is a vital member
of the Board of Directors of The Cathedral Club of Brooklyn, the Ameri-
can Legion and the Brooklyn Diocese Employee Pension Plan Committee; in
addition, he holds the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of
Holy Angels Academy in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and serves as Vice Chairman
of Fort Hamilton Citizens Action Committee; and
WHEREAS, A true public servant, Michael R. Long held leadership posi-
tions in numerous civic and charitable organizations including Secretary
on the Board of Trustees for Daytop Village, Inc., Chairman of Daytop
International, Vice Chairman of the 5th Avenue Business Improvement
District (BID), as well as Vice Chairman of the Dyker Heights Civic
Association; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man also served on the Advisory Board of
Directors for the Guild for Exceptional Children, and was an enthusi-
astic member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Division 22; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Michael R. Long has stood constant
in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his communi-
ty, Michael R. Long has been the recipient of numerous awards and acco-
lades such as the Knights of Columbus Pro Patria Award, the Bishop
Mugavero CYO Award, the Kiwanis Club Man of the Year Award, the Terence
Cooke "Gift of Life" Award, the 2004 Man of the Year Award, and the
American Legion Kings County Youth Recreational Facility Award; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Michael R. Long was bestowed upon the presti-
gious Charlton Heston Courage Under Fire Award, the 2011 Irish Pro Deo
Et Patria Award, and the 2013 Eugene Walsh Award; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Michael R. Long was named the Grand Marshal of
several parades such as the 145th Kings County Memorial Day Parade, the
Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade and the July 4th Knights of Columbus
Parade; he has also been honored by the Sergeant's Benevolent Associ-
ation and the Retired Detectives Association; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his stellar career, Michael R. Long has appeared
on national and local news programs including "Crossfire," "Hardball,"
"Face Off", "Inside City Hall" on NY 1, and WABC radio; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his loving wife, the former
Eileen Dougherty; his nine devoted children, Michael, Matthew, James,
Robert, Christopher, Francis, Edward, Eileen and Maureen; as well as his
21 treasured grandchildren and one great-granddaughter, all of whom feel
privileged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Michael R. Long has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Michael R. Long upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the 2016 Civic Award by the Bay Ridge Community Council; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Michael R. Long.
