LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 200th Anniversary of the
Village of New Berlin, New York, on June 11, 2016
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the
noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 200th Anniversary of the Village of New Berlin, in Chenango
County, New York; and
WHEREAS, Established on April 3, 1807, the Town of New Berlin was
founded by a partition of the Town of Norwich in 1807; and
WHEREAS, The Village of New Berlin was incorporated in 1816, and it
was named after Berlin, Connecticut, from which many new Yankee settlers
had come; and
WHEREAS, The Village's historic district includes 122 properties in
both residential and commercial areas; the Preferred Manor Guest House
was built in 1831, and is listed on the National Register of Historic
places as a stop in the Underground Railroad of the Civil War; today, it
serves as a bed and breakfast owned and operated by the Preferred Mutual
Insurance Company, which also has its corporate home in New Berlin; and
WHEREAS, According to the 2000 Census, 1,129 residents of 425 house-
holds and 256 families resided in the Village of New Berlin; many of
these residents attend services at the Methodist, Episcopalian, Cathol-
ic, Baptist or Pentecostal church; and
WHEREAS, The Unadilla Valley Central School, about two miles south of
the Village, was established as a merger between the former New Berlin
and adjacent South New Berlin Central School Districts; it is comprised
of 105 full and part-time teachers, teacher assistants and 80 support
staff members managing High School, Elementary School and Middle School
students; in addition, the Village is also home to the Milford Academy,
formerly of Milford, Connecticut; and
WHEREAS, The Village of New Berlin has something for everyone; an
active and diverse community, the Village hosts an Art Council which
provides various performances throughout the year, and maintains its own
library in continued support of the arts and literature; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the delightful Village of New Berlin offers
residents and visitors numerous places to eat, shop or just sit and
relax; and
WHEREAS, There are also plenty of activities for children to partic-
ipate in such as day camp and Vacation Bible School; kids also like to
play at several picnic and playground areas, and swim and canoe on the
local lake, as well as attend numerous school-sponsored activities; and
WHEREAS, During the summer, tourists enjoy camping, boating, fishing
and picnicking at Hunts Pond State Park, a nearby attraction which
offers camping, a boat launch, fishing and a picnic area; opened year
round, the park is adjacent to state land ideal for hiking, snowmobiling
and cross-country skiing; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of growth
and change, under the luminous leadership of Mayor Terry Potter, the
Village of New Berlin continues its commitment to enhancing the quality
of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive business, institutional and
educational climate, and providing all essential services; now, there-
fore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Village of New Berlin, New
York, on June 11, 2016, recognizing the significance of the role it
continues to play in the life of the community of the State of New York;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Terry Potter, Mayor, Village of New Berlin.
