LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Marguerite V. Smith upon the occa-
sion of celebrating her 104th Birthday

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commemorate and
recognize certain milestones celebrated by citizens of this great Nation
and Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Marguerite V. Smith of Dunkirk, New York, upon the occasion of
celebrating her 104th Birthday; and
WHEREAS, Marguerite V. Smith was born in Heilwood, Pennsylvania, on
May 18, 1912, to Eugenia and Albin Pognant, who migrated to the United
States from Northern Italy in 1905; Marguerite moved to Brocton at a
very young age and has lived there since; and
WHEREAS, Marguerite V. Smith started her career working as a school
teacher in a very rural school district in Pomfret, New York; when the
district was centralized, she was one of the first teachers to teach
sixth grade at Brocton Central School; and
WHEREAS, Marguerite V. Smith was offered a teaching position at Frank-
linville Central School where she also taught sixth grade; a few years
later, she was recruited by Ripley Central School where she taught
fourth grade; she retired from Ripley Central School in 1972; and
WHEREAS, Marguerite V. Smith, together with her late husband Donald,
raised a son, Harold; they were further blessed with three grandchil-
dren, Robert, Kirk and Kathleen; and two great grandchildren, Andrea and
Emily; and
WHEREAS, With a positive outlook and a steadfast love for her many
friends and family, Marguerite V. Smith looks forward to each day; she
remains young at heart and enjoys spending time with her family; and
WHEREAS, Marguerite V. Smith is an avid gardener, enjoys canning,
picking and tying grapes, and habitually reads the WALL STREET JOURNAL;
and
WHEREAS, Marguerite V. Smith frequently met with a club of neighbor-
hood women in Brocton, New York; she also belonged to The School Belles,
a group of retired teachers from Ripley Central School; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman, who has experienced the incredible
joys and sorrows characteristic of, and reserved for, those with the
stamina and courage to savor a full life, has inspired the lives of her
many friends and family members; and
WHEREAS, Marguerite V. Smith has enriched the lives of those around
her through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the
quiescent charm and wisdom which comes only from fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize and honor the lives of beloved citizens who have reached a remark-
able age and who have witnessed and celebrated the innovations, cultural
developments, and awesome achievements of this country during the last
century; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Marguerite V. Smith upon the occasion of celebrating her
104th Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Marguerite V. Smith.
