LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Florence Timothy for her distinguished
community service on February 14, 2015, in conjunction with the obser-
vance of Black History Month
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Florence Timothy for her distinguished community service to be cele-
brated on February 14, 2015, at the Brown Memorial Baptist Church,
Brooklyn, New York, in conjunction with the observance of Black History
Month; and
WHEREAS, Florence Timothy, or "Miss Florence," as she is affectionate-
ly known, was born in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, where she
graduated high school; in the early 1960s, she emigrated to New York
City to make a better life for her family; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed woman worked at the flagship Saks Fifth Avenue
store in Manhattan for over 20 years, managing the Fine Jewelry & Fash-
ion Jewelry Departments; subsequently, she opened a wedding and special
occasion boutique until retiring in 2000, to become a full time communi-
ty activist; and
WHEREAS, Florence Timothy's first experience with community activism
came in the form of coordinating sidewalk sales for local entrepreneurs
and vendors to sell arts and crafts, baked goods, and clothing; these
events were a big success and brought local residents together in a
positive way; and
WHEREAS, Seeing an opportunity to further help the community, Florence
Timothy continued to hold these events as fundraisers for local food
pantries, shelters, schools, churches and to help local entrepreneurs
reach their goals; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Florence Timothy has been a proud supporter of
the Young Entrepreneur Sidewalk Sale, which provides neighborhood chil-
dren with the opportunity to learn entrepreneurship by selling their own
wares and creations; she also helped organize a bus ride for the chil-
dren to go to Dorney Park along with their parents and grandparents; and
WHEREAS, Since then, Florence Timothy has been called upon to contrib-
ute her time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and
has always given of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Florence Timothy has contributed her time and energies to
countless worthy causes over the years, including neighborhood beautifi-
cation projects, the Teen Challenge, food drives for storm and earth-
quake victims, and fundraisers for local schools; and
WHEREAS, A woman of faith, Florence Timothy can often be found at her
church, Queen of All Saints; it is her devoted values which continue to
inspire her drive to help others; and
WHEREAS, Florence Timothy has been the recipient of numerous awards
and accolades for her outstanding service, including the Brooklyn Teen
Challenge Crystal Hope Award, the God Touch Our Children Picture Award,
the Parent Teachers Association Appreciation Award, and the New York
City Department for the Aging Award for Dedicated Service to the Commu-
nity; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her four children, and five
grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and
rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Florence Timothy has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Florence Timothy for her distinguished community service, in
conjunction with the observance of Black History Month; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Florence Timothy.
