LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the tragic and untimely death of 18
year-old Jose Melendez of Brooklyn, New York

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is deeply moved to inscribe upon its
records this remembrance for Jose Melendez, a young man who was known
for his keen sense of humor and his care and concern for others; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to mourn the death
of 18 year-old Jose Melendez of Brooklyn, New York, who died on Wednes-
day, January 27, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Born on August 18, 1997, in Honduras, Jose Melendez was a
student at the Cultural Academy for the Arts and Sciences, as well as a
member of the NYPD School Safety Law Enforcement Exploring Post, the
preeminent career orientation and experience program for young people
contemplating a career in law enforcement or a related field in the
criminal justice system; and
WHEREAS, Jose Melendez was diagnosed with cancer in his leg in June of
2012, and after a courageous four year battle, he succumbed to his
illness; and
WHEREAS, A truly beautiful soul, Jose Melendez heroically battled this
invasive disease and carried the uncertainty of tomorrow in his heart;
anyone having the pleasure of being touched by his spirit knows that his
will to live was never diluted by his challenges and his contagious
smile has left a permanent mark in the hearts of those lucky enough to
have known him; and
WHEREAS, Jose Melendez, a young man of incredible spirit and enthusi-
asm, truly brought enduring honor to his family through his many
achievements; his memory will remain in the hearts of all those who had
the privilege of knowing him; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the tragic and untimely death of 18 year-old Jose Melendez, of
Brooklyn, New York, and to express its deepest condolences to his fami-
ly; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Jose Melendez.
