LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating W. Michael Hobin, World War II
Veteran, upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th Birthday on June 10,
2016
WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate W.
Michael Hobin upon the occasion of his 100th Birthday to be celebrated
with a Family Party held in his honor in Florida; and
WHEREAS, Son of Patrick and Emma Hobin, W. Michael Hobin was born on
June 10, 1916, in Rutherford, New Jersey; he is one of seven children,
the second youngest of four boys and three girls, and the only surviving
sibling; and
WHEREAS, W. Michael Hobin married the late Dorothy Zeissner in 1940 in
Spring Valley, New York; the couple was married for 49 years; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his two daughters, four grand-
children, and three great-grandsons, all of whom feel privileged to be a
part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, During World War II, W. Michael Hobin served his country
proudly as a Pilot in the United States Army Air Corps; his 26 military
air raids consisted of 15-hour flights in B-17s over Germany, six of the
raids were over Berlin; and
WHEREAS, This valiant soldier experienced a great deal as a pilot
during his time served in the United States Army Air Corps and takes
pride in his contributions in defending his country; and
WHEREAS, W. Michael Hobin became an accomplished instructor during his
exceptional service and trained pilots to fly military aircraft such as
the T-6, C-45, B-25 and the C-47; and
WHEREAS, On October 1, 1944, W. Michael Hobin was involved in a
dangerous training mission during a rainy night with thick fog; his
plane experienced engine failure and caught fire which required that he
parachute from the plane; when he landed, he broke his right leg and
ankle and spent 83 days in the hospital; and
WHEREAS, During the Korean War, W. Michael Hobin served state-side,
and retired from military service with the esteemed rank of Major; and
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so faithfully and courageously in wars in which our Nation's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace during
peacetime, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with his zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of his family and friends; and
WHEREAS, W. Michael Hobin, who today is still living independently,
has experienced the incredible joys and sorrows characteristic of and
reserved for those with the stamina and courage to savor a full life;
and
WHEREAS, This distinguished man has enriched the lives of those around
him through his joyous and sincere love for others and through the
quiescent charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years;
and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last nine decades, while them-
selves contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire
State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate W. Michael Hobin upon the occasion of celebrating his 100th
Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to W. Michael Hobin.
