LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Pi Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated upon the occasion of celebrating its
30th Pearl Anniversary on June 3, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those
illustrious organizations within the State of New York whose focus and
intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in their
communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Pi Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
upon the occasion of celebrating its 30th Pearl Anniversary on Friday,
June 3, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the
campus of Howard University in 1908 by a group of academically inspiring
women as the first Greek-letter sorority for African American women; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is comprised of
over 290,000 college trained women with members in over 993 chapters
located in the United States, the Caribbean, Germany, Korea, Japan and
Dubai; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, since being founded
over a century ago, has helped to improve social and economic conditions
through community service programs by working with communities through
service initiatives and progressive programs relating to Educational
Enrichment, Health Promotion, Family Strengthening, Environmental Owner-
ship and Global Impact and continues to do so through its current Inter-
national Program; "Launching New Dimensions of Service"; and
WHEREAS, In 1986, the Pi Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Incorporated was chartered by 19 innovative and inspiring
women and dedicated to the principles of its charter members; and
WHEREAS, Today, under the luminous leadership of President, Mary
Frances Perkins and Vice President, Traci Gardner, Pi Iota Omega Chapter
is comprised of 85 active members who have continued the tradition of
providing service programs to enrich and improve its White
Plains/Greenburgh communities; and
WHEREAS, For the last three decades, Pi Iota Omega Chapter has
impacted its community by partnering with corporate and other service
organizations such as The Thomas H. Slater Center, White
Plains/Greenburgh NAACP, White Plains Youth Bureau, and MLK Day of
Service Projects; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Pi Iota Omega Chapter has helped feed the home-
less at Union Baptist Church, implemented mentoring programs for AKA
teens and middle school girls, sponsored annual coat drives, conducted
voter registration and education activities, and distributed educational
scholarships for college bound students through both local and national
organizations such as the UNCF, the Urban League of Westchester Black
Scholars Program, the Lois Bronz Child Care Center; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the members of Pi Iota Omega Chapter partic-
ipated and volunteered for the American Heart Walk, Making Strides for
Breast Cancer, National Alliance on Mental Illness Walk, and the Lupus
Walk; and
WHEREAS, The success of Pi Iota Omega Chapter is in direct correlation
to the efforts of its members, whose involvement is, and always has
been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusi-
asm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all endeavors on
behalf of the sorority and the population it serves; and

WHEREAS, In light of its commitment, dedication, and successful
efforts, it is the practice of this Legislative Body to extend its high-
est commendation to the Pi Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Inc.; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Pi Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
upon the occasion of celebrating its 30th Anniversary on June 3, 2016;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mary Frances Perkins, President, and Traci Gardner, Vice
President, Pi Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorpo-
rated.
