LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Jim Brown upon the occasion of his
induction into the 2016 New York State Public High School Athletic Asso-
ciation Hall of Fame

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor those indi-
viduals whose exceptional athletic prowess leaves an enduring legacy in
their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late Jim Brown upon the occasion of his induction into the 2016 New York
State Public High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame to be cele-
brated on Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at the Turning Stone Resort and
Casino in Verona, New York; and
WHEREAS, Jim Brown attended Manhasset High School in Manhasset, New
York, where he lettered in multiple sports, including football, basket-
ball, track and field, lacrosse and baseball; and
WHEREAS, In 1952, Jim Brown won the Thorp Award for Most Outstanding
Football Player in Nassau County and averaged 38 points per game for his
school's basketball team; he also received two All-County honors in
football and two Newsday All Scholastic Honors in basketball while also
winning the Nassau County High Jump Championship and being named an
All-Metropolitan Lacrosse League midfielder; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Manhasset High School in 1953, Jim
Brown attended Syracuse University where he earned All-American honors
in lacrosse and football and lettered in basketball and track and field;
and
WHEREAS, In 1957, Jim Brown was drafted by the Cleveland Browns and
became the NFL's Rookie of the Year that season; during his exceptional
9-year career, he was named to 9 Pro Bowl teams, won three Associated
Press MVP awards, was an eight-time rushing champion while also helping
his team win an NFL Championship in 1964; and
WHEREAS, Widely considered the greatest running back in NFL history as
well as the greatest collegiate athlete, this sporting legend was
elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971 and the National
Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1983; his number 32 jersey was also retired by
the Cleveland Browns; and
WHEREAS, Athletes like Jim Brown provide a tremendous service to the
future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of student-ath-
letes in their athletic journeys and ensuring their success in their
future years; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
public education by providing their skills and talents to our students
and our schools; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Jim Brown upon the occasion of his induction into the 2016
New York State Public High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Jim Brown.
