LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Art Allen upon the occasion of his
induction into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of
Fame
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Art
Allen upon the occasion of his induction into the Schenectady City
School District Athletic Hall of Fame, to be celebrated at its 19th
Annual Hall of Fame and Reunion Dinner on Monday, September 12, 2016, at
Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady, New York; and
WHEREAS, Art Allen is a 1980 graduate of Mont Pleasant High School,
where he distinguished himself by his many notable achievements in track
and field and set new records in the 60, 100 and 220-yard sprints; and
WHEREAS, Art Allen was a Section II Indoor and Outdoor track champion
in several events from 1978-1980, including the 1979 New York State
Indoor track 330-yard event and the 1980 New York State Indoor track
300-meters where he set a new state and national record; and
WHEREAS, In 1980, Art Allen became the Eastern States 300-meter Indoor
Champion and the New York State 200m Outdoor Champion, where he set a
record which lasted for 32 years; he was also named New York State
Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and was selected as an Indoor Track
All-American; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable athlete attended the University of Houston
before transferring to Northeastern University where he won the 100 and
200-meter events at both the Greater Boston and New England champion-
ships, indoor and outdoor; he also placed second in the 100-meter dash
at the Boston College Relays; and
WHEREAS, During his sophomore year, Art Allen earned the nickname,
"Northeastern's Fastest Human" by winning the 55-meter dash with a
record time of 6.32 seconds at the Greater Boston Indoor Championships;
he also set further new records in outdoor track, and swept the 100 and
200 meters at the New England Outdoor Championships; and
WHEREAS, The crowning moment of Art Allen's college career came at the
New England Outdoor Championships on May 1, 1984, when he took home the
gold medal in both the 100 and 200 meter events with a pair of school
records; his 200-meter record still stands today; and
WHEREAS, Art Allen graduated from Northeastern University in 1986,
with a degree in Electrical Engineering Technology; he has worked for
the past six years as a district service manager at Emerson Network
Power's Liebert Services in San Francisco, California; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Art Allen; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to honor Art Allen for his
extraordinary athletic accomplishments which are a tribute to his skill,
dedication and commitment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations with
praise and pride to honor Art Allen upon the occasion of his induction
into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Art Allen, and the Schenectady City School District Athletic
Hall of Fame.
