LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 160th Anniversary of the Kane
Street Synagogue in Brooklyn
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
achievements of those organizations that substantially contribute to the
vitality and well-being of their communities and the entire Empire
State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 160th Anniversary of the Kane Street Synagogue in Brooklyn;
and
WHEREAS, Since 1856, the Kane Street Synagogue, also known as Baith
Israel Anshei Emes, has been a place of Jewish worship and spiritual
growth in Brooklyn, dedicated to providing all interested in Judaism a
place to gather, pray, and study; and
WHEREAS, For 160 years, the Kane Street Synagogue has worked tireless-
ly to serve the Brooklyn community, creating one of the first Jewish
schools in Brooklyn in 1864, which continues to educate those interested
in Judaism today; and
WHEREAS, The Kane Street Synagogue is the oldest Jewish congregation
in Brooklyn that still serves the neighborhood in which it was founded,
and a vital part of Cobble Hill; and
WHEREAS, Led by Rabbi Samuel Weintraub, the Congregation's values of
social justice, religious and cultural integration, and civic and inter-
faith participation has ensured strong community-building and engagement
beyond its role as a house of worship; and
WHEREAS, The Kane Street Synagogue has ensured the survival of the
congregation and its founding ideals by balancing tradition with
progress; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to the Kane Street
Synagogue; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges this exceptional organization and its valuable contributions to
the community, fully confident that it will continue to enjoy the
successes it has experienced thus far; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 160th Anniversary of the Kane Street Synagogue in Brook-
lyn; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Rabbi Samuel Weintraub, Kane Street Synagogue.
