LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the American Diabetes Association upon
the occasion of celebrating its 25th Annual Tour de Cure on June 4, 2016
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those
organizations which work to serve the health care needs of citizens of
the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the American Diabetes Association upon the occasion of celebrating its
25th Annual Tour de Cure in Niagara Falls, New York, on Saturday, June
4, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Founded by 26 physicians in 1941, the American Diabetes Asso-
ciation has diligently worked to prevent and cure diabetes and to
improve the lives of all people affected by this disease; for three
decades, it remained an organization for health care professionals; in
1970, the Association welcomed general members, and in the years since,
it has grown to include a network of more than one million volunteers;
and
WHEREAS, The 2016 Buffalo Niagara Tour de Cure provides an excellent
opportunity for the American Diabetes Association to bring greater
awareness to this health issue which affects millions of New Yorkers and
Americans; and
WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1991, Tour de Cure riders have raised
significant funds to help advance its mission and move us closer towards
the ultimate goal to Stop Diabetes!; and
WHEREAS, The Tour de Cure is more than just a cycling event, it is a
day packed with excitement and energy where riders of all levels join
forces in the fight to Stop Diabetes! and raise critical funds for
diabetes research, education and advocacy in support of the American
Diabetes Association; and
WHEREAS, Throughout its 25 year history, the Tour de Cure has grown
from five pilot sites to 44 states nationwide; today, the tour attracts
61,000 cyclists annually, raising millions of dollars for diabetes
prevention and research, and to advocate for those diagnosed with
diabetes; and
WHEREAS, Through the steadfast and committed efforts of the American
Diabetes Association, the number of incidences of diabetes complications
dramatically improved from 1990-2010; and
WHEREAS, In the last quarter century, major progress has been made in
diabetic research including the introduction of long-acting insulin,
medication which lowers elevated blood sugar in patients with type 2
diabetes, and advancements in treatments to prevent blindness in people
with diabetes; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body recognizes the vital importance of the
American Diabetes Association in providing excellence in care through
prevention, education and treatment, and its evident commitment to this
mission; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the American Diabetes Association upon the occasion of celebrat-
ing its 25th Annual Tour de Cure on June 4, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the American Diabetes Association.
