LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 30th Anniversary of Manhattan
Youth in Lower Manhattan

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
achievements of those organizations that substantially contribute to the
vitality and well-being of their communities and the entire Empire
State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 30th
Anniversary of Manhattan Youth in Lower Manhattan; and
WHEREAS, Since 1986, Manhattan Youth has served the families and
communities of Lower Manhattan extensively and has provided our youth
with extraordinary experiences and opportunities; and
WHEREAS, Manhattan Youth's afterschool programs first began in P.S.
234 in 1989, but have since been introduced to 15 elementary and middle
schools throughout Manhattan; and
WHEREAS, Since 1992, Downtown Day Camp has been an important part of
Lower Manhattan, providing educational, creative, and athletic experi-
ences to over 1,000 kids, as well as offering job opportunities for
teens and young adults; and
WHEREAS, In the aftermath of 9/11, Manhattan Youth organized one of
the first community meetings, bringing together nearly 1,000 Lower
Manhattan residents; and
WHEREAS, Despite taking in over 20 feet of water from Superstorm
Sandy, the team at Manhattan Youth was able to persevere and resume
normal operations shortly thereafter; and
WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Bob Townley, Manhattan Youth has
become a prominent part of Lower Manhattan, creating a strong, communi-
ty-based environment and providing our youth with incredible opportu-
nities to grow; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Manhattan Youth; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges this exceptional organization and its contributions to the commu-
nities of Lower Manhattan, fully confident that it will continue to
serve as it has thus far; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 30th Anniversary of Manhattan Youth in Lower Manhattan;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Manhattan Youth.
