LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 130th Anniversary of the dedi-
cation of the Statue of Liberty

WHEREAS, It is the duty of this Legislative Body to bring such civic
awareness as is due to significant and influential events memorialized
in our national heritage; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
130th Anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of Liberty in recogni-
tion of her role as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy; and
WHEREAS, The Statue of Liberty was commissioned to commemorate the
centennial of the American Declaration of Independence in 1876, arrived
in New York Harbor on June 17, 1885, and was officially dedicated by
President Grover Cleveland on October 28, 1886; and
WHEREAS, The Statue of Liberty was a joint effort between France and
the United States and serves as a reminder of international cooperation
and local community engagement, as both countries rallied their citizens
to raise funds for this important national symbol; and
WHEREAS, A Presidential Proclamation declared Fort Wood and the Statue
of Liberty to be a National Monument on October 15, 1924, and in later
years expanded to include Liberty Island and Ellis Island, now attract-
ing millions of visitors each year; and
WHEREAS, The Statue of Liberty has served as an inspiration to immi-
grants sailing past to arrive in America in pursuit of opportunity and
is an icon for perseverance, acceptance, and the American Dream; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 130th Anniversary of the dedication of the Statue of
Liberty, and recognizing the important symbolic role the Statue of
Liberty holds in the fabric of American society and culture; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the National Park Service.
