LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of George R. Low, World War II
veteran, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, George R. Low of Pine Bush, New York, died on Sunday, June 5,
2016, at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, Born in Pine Bush, New York, on May 13, 1926, to Mary Frances
Cooper and William Low, George R. Low spent his life in Pine Bush, the
town he loved; and
WHEREAS, George R. Low proudly served his country as a member of the
United States Army in the 135th Engineer Combat Battalion as a Private
First Class during World War II where he was awarded a Purple Heart,
Bronze Star and World War II Victory Medal, and was on the second Honor
Flight from the Hudson Valley; and
WHEREAS, A career in public service, George R. Low spent 37 years with
the United States Postal Service, including 20 as Postmaster; his career
also included over 30 years as a Director of the Wallkill Valley Federal
Savings and Loan, 12 years on the Town of Crawford Assessment Board of
Review, 11 years on the Pine Bush School Board and four years as Park
Commissioner; and
WHEREAS, George R. Low distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, George R. Low's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, A proud supporter of veterans organizations and causes,
George R. Low served as Past Commander of the G. Paul Bettinger Post
American Legion No. 1308 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and
WHEREAS, An integral part of his community, George R. Low was very
active in many Pine Bush service organizations including Past President
of the Pine Bush Ambulance Corp where he founded the annual 5K race,
Coach, Manager and Umpire of the Pine Bush Little League, Meals on
Wheels, and past Fire Commissioner and past Assistant Chief of the Pine
Bush Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, An active outdoor enthusiast, George R. Low enjoyed spending
time at the Iroquois Hunting and Fishing Club where he served as a Pres-
ident and Director; he also liked spending time with his friends at the
local McDonald's and playing cards at the Pine Bush Library; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years, Helen; his son,
George William; and his sister, Mary Schmidt; George R. Low is survived
by his two daughters, Terry (Frank) and Coby; one son, Steve (Anne); and
five grandchildren, Daniel, Elizabeth, Keirstin, Steven and Morgan; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, George R. Low leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of George R. Low, World War II veteran, distinguished
citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of George R. Low.
