LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Gene C. Terry distinguished
citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Gene C. Terry of Whitehall, New York, died on Monday, May 9,
2016, at the age of 80; and
WHEREAS, Born June 10, 1935, to the late Ken and Vera (Scism) Terry in
Whitehall, New York, Gene C. Terry was a 1954 graduate of Whitehall High
School, where he played on its undefeated football team from 1951 to
1953; and
WHEREAS, Upon his graduation from high school, Gene C. Terry went to
work for 16 years at the Northern Indiana Brass Company (Nibco) in South
Glens Falls; he went on to an illustrious three decade career with the
Department of Corrections, along with working for the Village of White-
hall as a chlorine plant operator; he retired from both in 1993; and
WHEREAS, Gene C. Terry distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure as a correction officer, Gene C. Terry had
an outside inmate work crew and performed community service in various
communities and villages; a skilled carpenter and stonemason, he taught
many inmates the trade by working with them; and
WHEREAS, Amongst numerous masonry achievements, Gene C. Terry refaced
the stone library in Fort Ann, and constructed the field stone monument
which continues to stand outside the entrance to Great Meadow Correc-
tional Facility; and
WHEREAS, Gene C. Terry's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, A steadfast advocate for local youth and sportsman rights,
Gene C. Terry was the sportsman representative on the Lake Champlain
Advisory Committee for 15 years; he also served as president of the
Adirondack Conservation Council, president of sportsman clubs, and as
president of the Whitehall Fish and Game Club for 20 years; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he was a member of the Whitehall Elks Lodge
No.1491, the Skenesborough Skeet Club, and for many years, wrote a week-
ly column in the WHITEHALL TIMES, "Outdoors in Whitehall"; and
WHEREAS, For two decades, Gene C. Terry taught the youth of Whitehall
to shoot safely under the then DCM, known today as the Department of
Civilian Marksmanship, at the senior rifle range on lower Main Street;
and
WHEREAS, With a true passion for woodworking, Gene C. Terry made more
than 5,000 bluebird houses which were donated to senior citizens at the
Washington County Fair; and
WHEREAS, A gentle man with a big heart, Gene C. Terry loved the great
outdoors and spending time with his family at their hunting camp on the
mountain in South Bay; one of his greatest pleasures was sharing hunting
stories over coffee with his friends; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his parents, Ken and Vera; his first wife of
35 years, Jean; his brother, Russell; his sister, Rita and her husband,
Bill; his son-in-law, Tom; and his grandson, Scott, Gene C. Terry is
survived by his present wife of 23 years, Dixie; his children, Debbie
(Butch), Pete (Betty), Polly (Ron) and Penny (John); his grandchildren,
Joe (Tabitha) and children, Jacob and Alanna, Paul (Jess) and son,
Logan, Jennifer (John) and sons, Johnny and Liam, Tim (Samantha) and
daughter, Ruby, Terri (Scott) and children, Dylan and Sabrina, Thomas
(Sarah) and children, Carson, Ryder and Josie; his wife's children,
Tammie (Terry) and daughters, Megan and Brooke, and her son and his
daughter, Chiara Leigh; his sisters-in-law, Fay and Shirley Ann; and
several nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Gene C. Terry leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Gene C. Terry distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Gene C. Terry.
