LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Ralph C. Johnson, American
politician, distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality and
character of life in this great Nation is indelibly enriched by the
faithful and caring efforts of those who devoted their life to public
service; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is moved to commemorate the purposeful
life and distinguished career of Ralph C. Johnson, native New Yorker and
North Carolina State Representative, and to express its sincerest sorrow
upon the occasion of his death; and
WHEREAS, Ralph C. Johnson of Greensboro, North Carolina, died on Tues-
day, March 15, 2016, at the age of 62; and
WHEREAS, Born on December 17, 1953, Ralph C. Johnson was raised in New
York City, New York; in 1979, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Busi-
ness Administration from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State
University; and
WHEREAS, After graduating, Ralph C. Johnson remained in North Caroli-
na, and lived and worked in Greensboro, North Carolina, for more than 40
years; and
WHEREAS, A hard-working member of the home improvement industry, Ralph
C. Johnson held the position of Construction Sales Manager at Wickes
Lumber and Lowes Hardware; in addition, he worked in Sales and Marketing
at the CAROLINA PEACEMAKER, Greensboro's African American Community
Newspaper; later, he branched out to start his own home improvement
business, Homesite Remodeling Company; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to his community, Ralph C. Johnson held numerous
leadership positions in various organizations such as co-Chairman of the
Concerned Citizens of Northeast Greensboro, Greensboro Zoning Commis-
sioner, and Vice-President of the Greensboro Groove Phi Groove Graduate
Chapter; and
WHEREAS, Ralph C. Johnson was also a vital member of the New Light
Missionary Baptist Church, Friends of the Library Board of Directors,
Eastside Civitan Club, and Citizens for Economic and Environmental
Justice, as well as Action Greensboro Advisory Board; and
WHEREAS, In 2014, Ralph C. Johnson was appointed to serve out the
remaining term of Congresswoman Alma Adams in the North Carolina House
of Representatives; one year later, he was elected to the position,
proudly serving the citizens of the 58th district; and
WHEREAS, Passionate about the plight of veterans, remembering the
handicapped, recognizing all branches of the military, eradicating
bullying in schools, as well as promoting school bus safety, Represen-
tative Ralph C. Johnson was the co-sponsor of 32 bills that were signed
into law; and
WHEREAS, As a distinguished member of the North Carolina House, Repre-
sentative Ralph C. Johnson sat on numerous committees including Appro-
priations, Appropriations Committee on Justice and Public Safety, Educa-
tion - Universities, Homeland Security, Military, and Veterans Affairs,
Judiciary IV, Public Utilities, State Personnel, North Carolina Legisla-
tive Black Caucus and Guilford County Delegation; and
WHEREAS, Ralph C. Johnson is survived by his brother, Glenn Johnson; a
stepdaughter, Whitney Knight; three uncles, Amos Reid, Prince (Maude)
Reid, and Horace Jacobs; four aunts, Candy Johnson, Anne Johnson, Emma
Johnson, and Christine Reid; family members, Geraldine Collins, Pattie
Jacobs, Sylvia Johnson, Margaret Ubah and Barbara Carter; as well as a
host of cousins, family members and friends; and
WHEREAS, In appreciation of his life of commitment, dedication and
substantial contribution, it is the intent of this Legislative Body to
inscribe upon its records this tribute to the memory of Ralph C. Johnson
that future generations may know and appreciate his admirable character,
his many benevolent deeds, and the respect and esteem in which he was
held; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Ralph C. Johnson, American politician, distinguished
citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Ralph C. Johnson.
