LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the City
of Saratoga Springs

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the proud and distinguished histories of the cities, towns and
villages which comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 100th Anniversary of the City of Saratoga Springs, to be
observed at its Centennial Celebration; and
WHEREAS, The Honorary Chairs of this year's auspicious milestone are
Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson, both of whom portray an enthusiasm
for this beautiful city; and
WHEREAS, The official seal adopted by the City of Saratoga Springs,
depicts a Mohawk family at High Rock Spring, and is based on an illus-
tration which pays homage to High Rock, and the Native Americans who, in
1771, brought Sir William Johnson to the "great medicine spring"; and
WHEREAS, In the 1770s, several pioneers attempted settlement in the
High Rock Area, and in 1783, General Philip Schuyler cut a path through
the wilderness, from his home in Old Saratoga, to the High Rock Spring,
and built a cabin; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, that same year, while on a northern tour, Gener-
al George Washington traveled to the High Rock Spring with his party,
and drank the waters before continuing their journey southward; and
WHEREAS, This great wealth of mineral waters led to Saratoga Springs,
New York, being renowned as "the Queen of the Spas"; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Saratoga Springs was set apart from the Town of
Saratoga in 1819, and seven years later, it was incorporated as a
village; and
WHEREAS, A true staple of this illustrious city, Saratoga Race Course
was opened in 1863, and moved to its current location the following
year; this thoroughbred track continues to attract thousands of fans,
young and old, to its gracious venue; and
WHEREAS, In 1915, the Village and Town of Saratoga Springs were incor-
porated to form the City of Saratoga Springs; and
WHEREAS, Today, the City of Saratoga Springs is more than 28 square
miles and has a year-round population of approximately 28,000; due to
its rich heritage as a health resort and gambling center, the city's
population swells to more than 84,000 during the summer season; and
WHEREAS, The City of Saratoga Springs has been the recipient of count-
less awards and accolades some of which include the Great American Main
Street Award, Great American Places Award, and Dozen Distinctive Desti-
nations Award; and
WHEREAS, In 2004, the city was federally designated as a "Preserve
America Community"; in addition, Saratoga Springs is home to more than
1,000 beautiful residences on the National Historic Register; and
WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the City of Saratoga Springs
continues to provide the quintessential quality of life for its resi-
dents; and
WHEREAS, The residents of the City of Saratoga Springs have a bright
outlook for the future of their community, which remains a beautiful
place in which to work, live and raise a family; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the City of Saratoga Springs' rich history
and enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative
Body is proud to pay tribute to this spirited city upon the occasion of
its 100th Anniversary; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the City of Saratoga Springs, and
to enthusiastically salute its residents as they celebrate this auspi-
cious occasion; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the City of Saratoga Springs.
