LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of James A. Carrigg, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavors
have served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the
great State of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is with great sorrow and deep regret that this Legislative
Body records the passing of James A. Carrigg, of Endwell, New York, on
October 11, 2014, at the age of 81; and
WHEREAS, James A. Carrigg, the son of the late John and Cecile
Carrigg, was a graduate of Binghamton North High School and attended
Union College before serving his country as a member of the United
States Army in Korea; and
WHEREAS, After completing his military service, this esteemed man
earned his associate's degree from Broome Community College, and began
working in the energy industry as a safety cadet at New York State Elec-
tric and Gas (NYSEG); and
WHEREAS, During a long and distinguished career with NYSEG, James A.
Carrigg rendered faithful, conscientious and valuable service, attaining
the high positions of Chairman, President and C.E.O; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, James A.
Carrigg, received an honorary degree from Binghamton University in
December 2012, and was also awarded the Baden-Powell Boy Scouts of Amer-
ica Distinguished Citizen Award and the Broome Community College Alumni
Distinguished Award; and
WHEREAS, James A. Carrigg has been called upon to contribute his time
and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, A strong believer in the value of education, James A. Carrigg
was a founder of the prestigious Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering
and Applied Science at Binghamton University; and
WHEREAS, James A. Carrigg's commitment to civic involvement was
further illustrated through his involvement in numerous and professional
organizations including, the Decker Foundation, Security Mutual Life,
the UHS Foundation, the New York Business Development Corp., the Broome
County Chamber of Commerce, and the Binghamton University Foundation;
and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man distinguished himself in his profession
and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of his community; his determination and commitment to his work
inspired all who knew him; and
WHEREAS, A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather
to his family throughout the years, James A. Carrigg was a member of the
Church of the Holy Family in Endwell, and also lived in Pinehurst, North
Carolina; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his parents, James A. Carrigg is predeceased
by his loving wife of 54 years, Loretta Gentile Carrigg, as well as his
brothers, Richard and Thomas; he is survived by his children, Patty and
Michael Mangan and John and JoAnn Carrigg; his grandchildren, Bryan
Bland, Blair and Chris Kaleta, Jackie and Alson McKenna, Matthew Carrigg
and fiancee Caitlin Coffey; one great-granddaughter, Caroline McKenna;
sisters-in-law, Mary and Thomas Muscatello, Nancy and Gerald Peterson,
Frances Feheley, Margaret and Leo Gilroy, Virginia Hope, Phyllis and Tom
Greene, Theresa and Tom Berry; as well as several nieces and nephews;
and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and a sense of compassion,
James A. Carrigg leaves behind a legacy which will long endure the
passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he served
and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of James A. Carrigg, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of James A. Carrigg.
