LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Bob McMahon upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Mary G. Breslin Volunteer Service Award
by LaSalle School on March 17, 2015
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledges their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity
among us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Bob McMahon
upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the 10th Annual
Mary G. Breslin Volunteer Service Award by LaSalle School, to be cele-
brated on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at the George E. Hanner Chapel
Cultural Center, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Volunteerism is an essential element of all societies; it
provides a way in which the human values of community, caring and serv-
ing can be sustained and strengthened; and
WHEREAS, Bob McMahon served as Executive Director of SCO Family of
Services, a Greater New York City agency providing family support,
education, special needs, foster care and homeless shelters to more than
40,000 children and families; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous direction of Bob McMahon, SCO Family of
Services, formerly known as St. Christopher's, grew from a small Long
Island based agency to become one of the largest social services provid-
ers in the New York area; and
WHEREAS, In addition, under his governance, SCO Family Service Center
for Family Life gained national recognition as a model for the inte-
gration of family development, youth work, community building and serves
as inspiration for non-profit agencies throughout the country; and
WHEREAS, After 38 years in this esteemed position, Bob McMahon's
talents allow him to lend experience and perspective to child welfare
agencies seeking to understand emerging trends such as managed care and
the importance of strategic planning for the future; and
WHEREAS, A tireless advocate for human service agencies across New
York State, Bob McMahon believes strongly in personal contribution,
exploration and volunteer service; and
WHEREAS, In dedication of his contributions to SCO and the field of
human services, the SCO Family Services Sea Cliff Campus was renamed the
Robert L. McMahon Children's Center to honor his lifelong and unwavering
commitment to serving New York's most vulnerable population; and
WHEREAS, A native of Albany, New York, Bob McMahon graduated from
Notre Dame; he is active in non-profit board service and is currently a
member of LaSalle School's Board of Trustees; and
WHEREAS, For his outstanding work in social services Bob McMahon has
been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades some of which
include, the 2011 Lewis Hine Award for Service to Children and Youth,
the 2011 David Roth Leadership Award from the Child Welfare League of
America, and the 2009 Reverend Monsignor Thomas J. Hartman Award from
Long Island's Advancement for Commerce, Industry and Technology; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Bob McMahon has displayed throughout
his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of a community and have shown a long
and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the recog-
nition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Bob McMahon upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the Mary G. Breslin Volunteer Service Award by LaSalle School on March
17, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Bob McMahon.
